It is never so simple as believing in a life after death. That gains no power or prestige in the tribal world. No. You must belong to the ARMY of God. And this "Army" always represents the interests of real live people here on planet earth. People who get power and prestige through the greatest weapon of all...FEAR. If people just wanted to have a child-like (and totally unsubstantiated belief in some magical future life)--that would be fine. But it is the sense of self-importance in this world that makes it impossible to stop there. You gotta proclaim how special your god is--and (by extension) how special you and your group are! And so it goes: power and control over others always being at the root...
