Riverhead Free Library is located in Long Island, New York. Diane Woodcheke says she was fired after she questioned her boss’s decision to only hire minorities. Her boss told her that “my people have been kept down,” and, therefore, only minorities should be hired at the library. Diane Woodcheke was fired by her boss, Joy Rankin. Joy Rankin. Woodcheke questioned this, telling her boss that “discrimination is illegal.” Woodcheke claims that her boss then mocked her and then fired her soon after. “Discounting people simply because of their race is the very definition of racism,” said Vesselin Mitev, Woodcheke’s attorney. .” Woodcheke filed her lawsuit in the New York State Division of Human Rights. It seeks unspecified damages. Joy Rankin, Woodcheke’s former boss, has not released a statement on the matter. The New York City Commission on Human Rights specifically says that discrimination is illegal in New York: The New York City Human Rights Law is one of the most comprehensive civil rights laws in the nation. The Law prohibits discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations based on race, color, creed, age, national origin, alienage or citizenship status, gender (including gender identity and sexual harassment), sexual orientation, disability, marital status, and partnership status. In addition, the Law affords protection against discrimination in employment based on unemployment status, arrest or conviction record, status as a victim of domestic violence, stalking, and sex offenses.
