The war was not started to free the slaves

..the slave issue was significant in polarizing the south and the north, and was a driver in the decision of the south to secede from the union

But the war was started to force the south back into the union, to preserve the US

..my point is that as a reason for northerners to fight, simply preserving the union as a political whole was insufficient

..it was the moral repugnance of the practice of slavery that Lincoln and his advisors were able to exploit that motivated sufficient numbers of northerners to pick up arms and fight

..freeing the slaves was an artifact of the union being preserved and passing legislation, applicable to all states, that the practice was prohibited

..as a side note, here in Arizona, this very midterm election, our Republican brain trust presented a ballot measure that is essentially equivalent to the nullification authority claimed by the confederacy

Arizona can now decide whether or not it wants to obey federal laws
