This is not Obama's forte. Unfortunately Putin is powerful, supported, ambitious, and capable of any level of thuggery to get his way. Where as, Obama is seen as a weak world leader who will shrug and flinch in the face of serious adversity. It is not a good match up and Putin knows he has at least 2 years to accomplish his primary objectives.

Russia is simply returning to its Soviet Union glory. Putin is threatening pretty much everyone at this point. "Obama needs to step it up very quickly." Yes, indeed. The sooner he does, the sooner Putin can announce new Russian submarine bases in Cuba and Venezuela. Let's just cut to the chase.
