Fossil record, you need better glasses & less pointy head. Or join the reasonable factions of intelligent Christians that see no problem (like the POPE) with religion & evolution joining to further the cause of awe & wonder for our world. Just substitute Nature for God if your a Pantheist, or God for Nature if you are a Deist, problem solved. One thing the we are admired for world wide is our programs caring for animals & teaching conservation of habitat, we get high reps for this, in Asia Chinese & even the followers of Islam .

By the time species emerge onto land most all the genes necessary for the expression of those new forms would already have been present in the aquatic life. Certainly the transition to air-breathers would involve many new changes but the genesis & templates were already mostly in place. The true titans of the story of evolution evolve first in the sea, from there the rest is natural selection, adaptation & descent with modification, even the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were well adapted to survival, evolution could have gone another route, there is serendipty involved, earth was not a closed system.
