Evolution works more dramaticly on small populations.
In large populations an organism with a novel gene that is a bit "better" would still probably mate with an organism that carried only the more common gene. In small populations the organisms will have to begin more incestuous mating within fewer generations and will therefore be more likely to pass on the gene (better or worse).
