Steve:

I have no way of accurately estimating the download speed except by anecdotal comparison to the T1 line I have at my office. Even though the T1 is supposed to have peak speed of 1.5 Megabps, the time it takes me to download a large (8 megabyte) file is more or less the same at home or at work (a few minuites). ( The T1 line probably gets somewhat slower due to heavy traffic during the workday). DirecPC has a half price option ($19.95/month) if you are willing to limit your peak download speed to 200 kbps.( You still need to have an ISP and modem for the uploads).A fringe benefit is a continuous scrolling stock ticker and/or sports ticker which is an "always on" feature and does not require you log on to your ISP first.
