Walmart Holds Food Drive for Needy Walmart Workers WE'D PREFER MORE PAY AND HOURS, WORKERS SAY By Rob Quinn, Newser Staff newser.com Posted Nov 21, 2014 5:26 AM CST (NEWSER) – Walmart employees in at least two locations are holding a food drive and bake sale, respectively, to benefit some needy people this holiday season: Walmart employees. According to the Consumerist, a canned food drive was launched to benefit employees at a superstore in Oklahoma City ( reads a sign: "Let's succeed by donating to associates in need!!!), and a Walmart in Indiana has reportedly been holding bake sales to benefit workers finding it tough to make ends meet. Last year, a Walmart in Ohio made the news by holding a food drive so "associates in need" could have Thanksgiving. The food drives have been highlighted by worker organizations including the pro-union group OUR Walmart. “My co-workers and I don’t want food bins,” says a member of the group. “We want Walmart and the Waltons to improve pay and hours so that we can buy our own groceries.” Walmart, however, defends the food drives, saying they're organized at the local level and well received. It's "unfortunate” that those trying to assist other workers or give back to the community "would be criticized for wanting to help," a spokeswoman tells CNBC. She says that in the case of the Oklahoma City store, the drive is benefiting two employees who had to take a leave of absence and are therefore down an income.
