I feel well represented by Obama, who's resisted putting American boots on the ground. I'm sure Hagel was hearing exactly the opposite prescription from the military, who have a vested interest in being relevant, and a huge financial interest in being so. As our hammer, they see every problem as a nail. I imagine Obama wants someone who will tell them no for him, rather than punt their proposals for him to decline them. ISIS is a canny organization, that provides Muslim youth with two things youth everywhere want, a paycheck and a cause to fight for. There's no countervailing influence with such persuasive power in their lives. It's not our job to provide one, but the states their recruits come from should want to do so, ASAP, before the Caliphate swallows them.
