New York Times buyout watch, 2014

By Joe Pompeo and Jeremy Barr 5:40 a.m. | Nov. 17, 2014

With a looming deadline for New York Times buyout applications, details about employees who have taken the package—or are believed to be strongly considering it—are starting to trickle out.

For starters, Capital has learned of two top business-side executives, Yasmin Namini and Tom Carley, who have opted for the buyout.

We've also confirmed that some buyout packages in the newsroom have already been accepted. Sources wouldn't specify names or numbers, but talk of potential or likely takers is spreading among their colleagues.

If buyouts are accepted for some of the bylines floated by multiple newsroom sources, the paper would see high-profile departures from its media, finance, culture and politics pages.

The Times announced on Oct. 1 that it needed to eliminate 100 newsroom positions as a cost-cutting measure. Executives said they hoped to achieve the reduction through voluntary buyouts but that layoffs would be necessary otherwise.

This year's downsizing, the fourth such mass reduction since the paper's first in 2008, comes while the Times is struggling with growth as it battles ongoing print advertising declines that have not fully been countered by gains in digital advertising and digital circulation.

The latest culling would bring the editorial headcount down to 1,230 from 1,330. The newsroom has seen ebbs and flows in its size over the past six years as resources have been redistributed to encourage digital growth.

As with previous buyouts, the current round appears to be tailored to longtime employees who are perhaps less essential to the growth blueprint.

Packages for members of the Newspaper Guild, a union that represents about 1,100 Times employees, range from 15 weeks of pay and four months' health coverage for employees with between five and six years of service, to double one year's pay, an additional 35 percent of that total and eight months' health coverage for employees with at least 35 years under their belts, according to the Guild.

Non-Guild employees are generally eligible for two weeks of salary per year of service, with the total capped at one year’s salary, according to the Times. Those with 20 years or more also are eligible for an additional cash payout of 35 percent of their total severance.

All buyout applications must be submitted by Dec. 1 and acceptance notifications will be delivered no later than 5 p.m. on December 2. Employees whose applications have been accepted are given 10 days to change their minds.

A source familiar with the process said the terms were roughly the same both for newsroom employees and the small number of senior business-side employees who were deemed eligible.

A Times spokesperson had no comment.

We'll be keeping a running tally of confirmed buyouts in the space below. Know of any? Are you a taker? Tip us: joe@capitalnewyork.com and/or jbarr@capitalnewyork.com.

• In a Nov. 6 staff memo obtained by Capital, Times publisher-chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and C.E.O. Mark Thompson announced that two long-serving business-side executives would be taking the buyout: chief consumer officer Yasmin Namini and S.V.P. of ventures Tom Carley.

Namini is a 30-year veteran who ascended the ranks of thecirculation department and was instrumental in implementing the Times' paid digital model in 2011. Carley has been with the Times since 1987 with roles including president of news services and head of strategic planning.

"Mark has asked each of them to stay into early next year to help in the transition as we reorganize under new leadership in digital and in marketing," the memo said.

• A source with direct knowledge of the newsroom buyouts said a "handful" have already been approved. The source would not provide names because it was possible some of those employees had not yet been informed.

• David Corcoran, editor of the Times' weekly science section, Science Times, confirmed to Capital that he's taking a buyout and will be retiring as of Dec. 19. Corcoran has worked for the Times since 1988, and has also served as health editor and assistant science editor.

Nov. 20: After giving Capital a terse "no comment" last Thursday, chief financial correspondent Floyd Norris confirmed to Talking Biz News today that he is taking a buyout and leaving the Times after 26 years. “After many years of doing two columns a week, I think it might be interesting to do something else, perhaps at a foundation or university, or perhaps writing on a less hectic schedule,” Norris told Talking Biz News. “If other opportunities arise, I will consider them, but for a while, I expect simply to take a break and be happily retired.” His last day is Dec. 19.

• Brian Knowlton, a D.C.-based editor and correspondent for The International New York Times, is taking a buyout after more than three decades at the company, according to a memo obtained by Capital. Knowlton's career began at The International Herald Tribune before the Paris-based foreign edition was rebranded as The International New York Times last year.

"In the 35 years since Brian first walked into the Trib newsroom in Neuilly, he has outlasted corporate owners and many, many editors, while witnessing a whole lot of history, much of which he recorded as the paper's man in Washington for the last two decades," Europe editor Dick Stevenson wrote in the memo. "At every step of the way, he has been a warm and generous colleague and a true trans-Atlantic diplomat, always under challenging deadlines."

• Additionally, Times staffers also were informed in a memo today that Fern Turkowitz, who serves as assistant to the sports editor, is retiring "after 47 years of ceaseless dedication."

• Yet another memo, this one from deputy executive editor Janet Elder, obtained and published by Mother Jones: "Early efforts to handicap the outcome regrettably point to having to do some layoffs. For the most part, we've been trying to review and either accept or reject voluntary buyout applications as they come in. Not all applications can be approved. Some jobs are too critical to our mission to let go."

Nov. 21: The Times' legal department sent out the following note to employees this week to clarify what happens if a buyout taker dies:

The Company wants to ensure that all employees participating in the buyout are secure in knowing that if anything should happen to them, any buyout payments remaining will still be paid out to their families. To that end, the attached notice advises you that the Excluded Buyout Plan has been amended to clarify that if an employee participant dies before all his/her buyout monies are distributed, the remaining monies due will be paid to the employee’s estate.

• Recode's Edmund Lee reports:

About 29 people have applied for the buyout with about 14 who have been accepted by management so far, according to two insiders. Applications, due Dec. 1, are still incoming, but based on an informal survey, the Times could fall short of its goal by as many as 25 to 30 positions, according to one person with knowledge of the matter. The Times could also be satisfied with less than 100 volunteers so long as the jobs being eliminated allow the Times to hit their financial goals.

But if the Times does have to fire people, it’ll do so by around Dec. 19, just before the holidays, one person said.

Nov. 26: The New York Post's Keith Kelly reports:

At the end of last week, there were only 29 requests in for voluntary buyout packages according to Grant Glickson, the Newspaper Guild’s unit representative at the Times. By Tuesday, six days before deadline, the union said the number had only grown to the “high 30s.”

The deadline to apply is Dec. 1 at 5 p.m.

If the Times is not able to get its desired 100 volunteers, Publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., and Executive Editor Dean Baquet warned that the company would make up the difference with involuntary cuts.

Additional employees are expected to submit requests by the deadline, Glickson told Media Ink — adding that he expects there will have to be “about 20-to-25 layoffs.”

• Capital's Nicole Levy has learned that Joseph Berger and Lon Teter have announced they are taking the buyout.

Berger, who's been a reporter and editor at the Times since 1984, confirmed the news with Capital.

Teter, the Times' special sections editor, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but his acceptance of the buyout was publicized on a Facebook group for Times alumni. UPDATE: "Yes, it's correct," Teter tells us via email. "I am taking the buyout and retiring on Dec. 5 after 26 1/2 years at The Times. I'm turning 63 in January and am happy to be able to retire."

Dec. 1: Times veteran David Firestone, who joined the paper's editorial board in 2010, announced on Twitter that he's taking a buyout. "After 21 years of reporting, editing and pontificating at the NYT, I'm taking the buyout," he wrote. "Will miss so many great colleagues; more fun TK."

• Poynter's Andrew Beaujon reported that sports reporter Barry Bearak is taking a buyout. Bearak, a former foreign bureau chief who won a Pulitzer in 2002, has been with the Times since 1997. Poynter also confirmed several other takers, including D.C.-based reporter Edward Wyatt and culture desk members Ron Wertheimer, David DeWitt, Christopher Phillips and Ray Cormier.

• Bill Carter, a longtime television reporter and one of the most senior figures on the Times' media desk, confirmed to Capital that he's taking a buyout.

In a brief phone interview, Carter called the decision to leave "tremendously agonizing ... I love this job and I love The New York Times and I have many close friends here. ... It's really not because I want to work somewhere else."

Rather, Carter said he was swayed by the financials of the offer.

"This is a pretty amazing offer for journalists who don't expect to get that kind of severance ever," he said. "I felt like I owed it to my family and myself to sort of get a nest egg out of this."

What's next? Carter said that he "deliberately" did not seek job offers at other publications while considering a buyout. "I'm just gonna hear and see if people call me up. I hope they do and maybe I'll consider whatever comes up," he said. "I'll be open to whatever."

• Don Hecker, director of The New York Times Student Journalism Institute, confirmed to Capital that he's taking a buyout. Hecker co-founded the annual training program, which recruits minority journalists. "I joined The Times in 1992 as a copy editor, was head of the Metro copy desk, and am now an editor in the newsroom's administrative unit, where I have done recruiting and newsroom training," Hecker told Capital in an email.

• After the 5 p.m. Dec. 1 deadline passed, a source close to the process confirmed that 61 Guild members applied for the buyout as well as around 20 non-Guild employees. The source emphasized that not all of the applications have been approved by Times management: "Now it's decision time."

Dec. 2: Lexi Mainland, special projects editor for interactive news, announced on Twitter that she's leaving. Mainland first joined the Times in 2006. "After 8.5 years, I'm moving on from @nytimes," she wrote. "It's been the thrill of a lifetime to play a part in the world's best journalism. I'll miss @nytimes immensely. It's been a fantastic adventure. Another one will begin soon. Stay tuned!"

• Poynter confirmed three additional names: late-night news editor David Geary, assistant business editor Jack Lynch and photographer Fred R. Conrad.

• Reporter Christine Haughney, who covers magazines and newspapers, announced on Twitter that she's leaving the Times. "After 8 years with @nytimes including nearly 3 years writing about my colleagues in the troubled newspaper industry, I am taking a buyout!" she wrote. "Still deciding what I'm going to do after @nytimes. But I'm excited to figure it out!"

• Douglas Martin, an obituary writer for the Times, is also taking a buyout, a source tells Capital. A staff memo yesterday announced his departure this way: "Doug Martin, who strode into the West 43rd Street headquarters of The Times in 1980 and went on to carve out a sterling 34-year reporting career with the paper, has decided to retire."

Just the names:

• Yasmin Namini, chief consumer officer

• Tom Carley, S.V.P. of ventures

• David Corcoran, editor, Science Times

• Floyd Norris, chief financial correspondent

• Brian Knowlton, editor; correspondent for The International New York Times

• Fern Turkowitz, assistant to the sports editor

• Joseph Berger, reporter and editor

• Lon Teter, special sections editor

• David Firestone, editorial board

• Barry Bearak, sports writer

The Co-Opting Of Ferguson

.............................................................................
The Daily Caller ^ | December 3, 2014 | Alex VanNess

Since the beginning of the Ferguson protests, national pro-Palestinian organizations have been co-opting the Michael Brown protests to further their anti-Israel agenda. These groups are positioning themselves as leaders within a broad coalition of supporters seeking to target law enforcement under the guise of promoting social justice and protecting civil rights.

Since the protests have begun, national organizations such as Code Pink, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), Muslims for Ferguson, and the Palestinian BDS National Committee have hijacked the Ferguson protests for their own purposes. These organizations have organized speakers, used social media, and created petitions that attempt to establish parallels between the Palestinians and Michael Brown.

Many of the people who support the Ferguson protests have no prior knowledge of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but Ferguson protesters have chosen sides, overwhelmingly showing solidarity with Palestinians. This opinion is not based on careful research, but on pro-Palestine groups’ willingness to glom on to other causes.

Members of these organizations traveled to Ferguson to march with other protesters. While in Ferguson, they weaved a pro-Palestinian message into the protests. They donned Palestinian keffiyas (traditional headscarves), pro-Palestinian t-shirts, and carried signs that said things such as, “Occupation is a crime, Ferguson to Palestine, Resist U.S. Racism, Boycott Israel.”

The pro-Palestinian sentiment throughout the Ferguson protests has led Palestinians in the Middle East to twitter in order to add to the Palestinian cause globally. Palestinians have been posting photos encouraging the protestors in Ferguson. These photos have received a sizable level of support from individuals who support the Ferguson protests.

Notably, Detroit Lion Reggie Bush posted a picture on his Instagram account of a man holding a sign reading, “The Palestinian people know what mean [sic] to be shot while unarmed because of your ethnicity #ferguson #justice.

Anti-Israel sentiments are not the only agenda item these organizations are pushing at the Ferguson protests. CAIR and other Muslim groups have also conspired with each other to equate the Ferguson shooting to the death of a radical Islamist Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah.

Abdullah, who has had a long criminal history, was shot and killed after he opened fire on FBI agents. CAIR officials have attempted to use the Brown protests to advance a narrative of the Abdullah shooting, as a conspiratorial effort by police to intimidate Muslims.

Attending protests and drawing superficial similarities between two unrelated causes is a creative propaganda effort aimed at garnering greater support to their own cause and positioning themselves as civil rights leaders. These organizations are deceptively painting the Michael Brown shooting, the Abdullah shooting, and Palestinian statehood as issues that fall under the same broad brush in an effort to push a political agenda.

It is important to call out these organizations for using protesters as pawns to acquire support for their own political agendas.

The Democrats Join the Jihad —
......................................................................................................................

The left ratcheted up its unceasing war on America and took it to a whole other level today. America’s fifth column.

The release of the torture report was unnecessary and uneventful. Big yawn. The savages who attacked this country were more sleep-deprived than originally thought? Awww. Fed rectally? Awww. More than 3 were waterboarded? Awww.

They lived when they should have faced a firing squad.

If the 2,997 souls that were murdered on 911 were given a choice between sleep deprivation or waterboarding as opposed to the choice they were given — facing the blistering fire of the massive fuel tanks of a Boeing 767–222 or jumping 100 floors to their certain death, I can say with absolute certainly that they would have chosen sleep deprivation and/or a suppository of food.

This grotesque and hate-filled act by the Democrats will come back to haunt these ghouls.

The Democrats empathize with beheaders, rapists and cannibals — anyone but proud Americans.

Islamic State Twitterati Use Senate Intelligence Report to Accuse U.S. of Terrorism, Recruit More Terrorists, By Sam Taylor, Washington Free Beacon, December 9, 2014

December 9, 2014 5:23 pm

On Tuesday, following the release of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on CIA interrogation techniques, supporters of the Islamic State and other terror groups took to Twitter to decry the United States with the hashtag #Torture_Report, posting excerpts of stories in order to encourage violence against the U.S. and Western nations.

Despite repeated warnings from U.S. politicians and security officials, the report was released shortly before noon on Tuesday and, after a few hours of combing through the 528-page report, jihadist Twitter users and IS supporters began using episodes of CIA “torture” to both accuse the U.S. of terrorism and incite marginalized Muslims to wage violent resistance against America and its allies in the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

One Twitter user from Algeria, Asad ad-Din Shirkuh, summed up the attitude of global jihadists after the report’s release:

One user, Fahad Al Juhani (whose Twitter profile suggests he is eager for the ‘day of judgement’), berated the U.S. for its “murderous” activities and suggested that this report was only a small part of the bigger picture: “This is the tip of the iceberg! What #America has practiced in bombing civilians and supporting dictatorships is more of a crime #torture_report #congress_report.”

This tweet from Abu Bakr #Caliph (undoubtedly a reference to IS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi) urges outraged Muslims to curb-stomp their offenders: “From now on when someone accuses your Muslim brother of terrrorism, stick the #torture_report on the heel of your shoe and shove it in his mouth.”

The Twitter user Mus’ab al-Iraqi justified torture of Americans: “The #torture_report says that torture was necessary to prevent possible attacks, I hope for reciprocity and we say that torture was necessary to prevent American attacks.”

Before deleting this tweet, Twitter user Musaed urged: “Every Muslim should check out these American crimes, the same needs to happen to them with Jihad, at least, or the #Islamic_State will claim them #torture_report #congress_report.”

?? ???? ???? ??? ??? ??????? ????????? ???? ??? ???? ???? ??????? ??? ????? ?? ???? ??? #??????_????????? #?????_??????? #?????_???????? — musaed ? (@alharthi_musaed) December 9, 2014

IS supporters also used the Senate Intelligence Committee report, and the journalistic reports it spawned, to identify countries that aided the U.S. in gathering intelligence from captured terrorists. This Twitter user, Alahmawlana, posted a map from The Guardian and used it as an informational bulletin for jihadists seeking revenge against countries that work with U.S. intelligence agencies: “List of countries that facilitated or incubated detention facilities for the American intelligence apparatus. #torture_report.”

Shirkuh even used an alleged report of rape to incite followers against Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah for cooperating with the U.S., using a vulgar reference (note, ‘gheerah’ means ‘jealousy’):

Al-Iraqi used the report to point out the hypocrisy of America and the West, and issued an ominous warning for America: “The #torture_report revealed that human rights are the biggest lie that the West raises over the Muslims, and they are reserved especially for the infidels only, not human rights. After today, an eye for an eye.

Greenpeace Irreparably Damage Ancient Nazca Lines

Pro tip: If you want to be taken seriously when you are delivering an important protest against the destruction of the Earth, it’s best to not desecrate a World Heritage Site in the process.

While this advice could probably be categorized under “logic for five year olds,” it has apparently eluded the folks at Greenpeace. Protestors from the group inflicted irreversible damage to the Nazca Lines in Peru when they laid out banners ironically decrying the destruction of the environment.

The message was meant to target delegates currently attending the UN climate summit in Lima, inspiring them to enact big changes. Instead, the Peruvian government is seeking to file criminal charges against the Greenpeace protestors for damaging an archeological monument, which could carry a sentence of six years in prison.

Why is this such a big deal? The Nazca Lines are a collection of hundreds of geoglyphs that were made by indigenous people over 1,500 years ago in the Pampas of Jumana in the Nazca desert. The designs include animals, people, shapes, and natural elements like flowers. Some of these designs are quite large, stretching 300 meters (990 feet) long. They were designed with little more than rope and wooden stakes and can only be viewed in their entirety from above, such as from the nearby foothills.

In order to make the lines, the Nazca people excavated 10-15 centimeters (4-6 inches) of reddish stone from the ground, revealing the light-colored soil underneath. The soil has a large amount of lime, which hardens and protects the lines from wind erosion. However, the properties of the ground which has allowed these glyphs to endure for over a millennium are why nobody—not even presidents or diplomats—are permitted to walk near the sites without approval and specialized footwear, as footprints can leave marks that will also endure over time. The area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 in order to preserve the images.

Not giving a damn about all of that, the members of Greenpeace willfully trespassed on the famous hummingbird structure in order to lay out their banners which read: "Time for Change! The Future is Renewable.” Though BBC reports a Greenpeace spokesperson said the protestors were careful not to step on the lines themselves, they have damaged the area surrounding it. This is kind of like using permanent marker to write your name on the Mona Lisa and saying, “It’s okay! At least I didn’t write on her face!”

When the backlash hit, Greenpeace issued this non-apology in response:

Greenpeace International

Non-Profit Organization · 2,078,926 Likes
· December 11 at 8:08am · Edited ·

Without reservation, Greenpeace apologises to the people of Peru for the offense caused by our recent activity laying a message of hope at the site of the historic Nazca Lines.
We are deeply sorry for this.
grnpc.org [Spanish]

Rather than apologizing for the damage they caused, they were merely sorry that some people didn’t like it. BBC also states that Greenpeace declined to comment on if they will be turning over the names of the protestors, as the Peruvian government insists. Kumi Niadoo, the executive director of Greenpeace, is planning to go to Peru and apologize in person.

The ACLU sent a letter to the Gloucester County, Virginia, School Board urging it to reject the policy that would limit school restrooms and locker rooms to "the corresponding biological genders." On Dec. 9, the Board voted to retain boys' and girls' restrooms and allow transgender students to use "an alternative private facility," but the ACLU rejected that compromise and says it will sue.

BARACK OBAMA’S GARDEN OF BEASTS

Obama henchmen installed at the top of the DOJ, FBI, CIA, NSA, DNI and the military.

Not to mention the Obama henchmen installed at the top of American Pravda, ABCNNBCBS. ( able and effective in terms of furthering the goals and plans of their Dear Leader, President Barack Obama.)

By the time that the true scope of Hitler’s horror was revealed and put into action, there were no levers or controls remaining within German society capable of resisting his march to tyranny, much less of stopping it.

And now it must be asked: at this point in America’s history, do we retain sufficient levers and controls to check Dear Leader Obama’s march toward assuming complete dictatorial control?

We can depend upon the fact that American Pravda’s “reporters” will only serve as Obama administration cheerleaders, no matter what “executive actions” he declares by fiat. Almost all military generals and admirals serving when Obama came into office have been forced into retirement and replaced by go-along-to-get-along politically-correct officers. Bear in mind that all flag-rank promotions are approved by the Senate, which has been under Obama’s Democrat Party control. And we have already seen the subversion of our intelligence services under Clapper, Brennan et al, and the “justice” department under Obama-loyalist Eric Holder.

Under these conditions, will Obama’s Garden of Beasts prove to be any easier to stop than Hitler’s?

We know that the leaders of the mainstream media have largely been co-opted and corrupted by the Obama administration. They will not even attempt to break the high and soundproof stone walls that they have helped to build around Obama’s many scandals.

These include Operation Fast and Furious, IRS political targeting, the intelligence agencies illegally spying on Obama’s perceived political enemies, and so on. Breaking the American Pravda embargo against truthful reporting is a lost cause.

Protesters Crash Slain Officer Memorial...Vileness of the Insane Leftwing
.........................................................................
by Ian Hanchett22 Dec 2014 4650

CNN Correspondent Sara Ganim reported that a group of protesters were yelling at police officers who had gathered to pay their respects at a memorial to slain NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos on Monday.

While Ganim said that most of the people who had showed up were paying their respects to the officers, she added “I do, just in full disclosure, want to say that in the last couple of minutes, for the first time today, we’ve seen protesters come out here and start yelling at groups of police who are mourning their slain police officers.”

Ganim continued “it’s just a few of them, Suzanne, and like I said, just in the last five minutes, and they’re quite frankly yelling at a group of police officers who are standing here silently, just looking at the memorial of candles and flowers and posters, and they’re yelling similar rhetoric that we’ve been hearing over the last couple of weeks related to the shooting of — the chokehold death of Eric Garner and the shooting of Michael Brown in Missouri.”

First,
there was a Geraldo Rivera selfie at Wenjian Liu funeral.

Then, as Sharpton enabler Rivera tried to crash the Liu funeral, he got turned away by officials, not wanting any part of the publicity whore Geraldo Rivera aka Gerry Rivers.

Marie Harf, ISIS "Jobs" and Liberal Denial
..............................................................................
Conservative Review ^ | February 19, 2015 | Jeffrey Lord

Marie Harf, the deputy spokesperson for the United States Department of State, is now the face of the Obama foreign policy in dealing with Islamic terrorists. Said Ms. Harf to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews as reported by Fox News:

“We're killing a lot of them, and we're going to keep killing more of them. ... But we cannot win this war by killing them," department spokeswoman Marie Harf said on MSNBC's "Hardball." "We need ... to go after the root causes that leads people to join these groups, whether it's lack of opportunity for jobs, whether --" “…If we can help countries work at the root causes of this -- what makes these 17-year-old kids pick up an AK-47 instead of trying to start a business?”

Got that? All this endless beheading and murder is about a lack of jobs.

Harf was immediately the subject of mockery. Then the kid from Granville, Ohio – in the best style of her badly learned East Coast snobbery that is always the telltale sign of insecurity – went snooty. “We cannot kill every terrorist around the world, nor should we try. How do you get at the root causes of this? It might be too nuanced an argument for some, like I’ve seen over the last 24 hours [in] some of the commentary out there, but it’s really the smart way that Democrats, Republicans, our partners in the Arab world think we need to combat it.”

Ah yes. Marie Harf doubles down on one network show after another. It’s all about the nuances and we peasants out here just aren’t smart enough to understand.

But let’s take her seriously – because in fact at this point it’s more than safe to assume that what Harf said was not some whimsical thought of her own but rather one of the core beliefs of her superiors in the State Department and the Obama White House. In fact, as seen in this Voice of America interview, Undersecretary of State Richard Stengel made the very same argument back in November of last year, with Stengel – a former Time magazine editor – saying: “There are structural problems in the Middle East and the Arab world that can sometimes make Daesh’s attractive, attractive to young men who don’t have jobs, who don’t see a great future for themselves…” So, with that in mind?

Marie Harf, meet the full employment Nazis.

Was Harf – who has a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Indiana University (with concentrations in Jewish Studies and Russian and Eastern European Studies) and a Masters in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia – skipping class when the subject of jobs in Nazi Germany was discussed? Assuming it was ever discussed? Well just in case let’s go back in time and take a look.

William S. Shirer was one of the most famous American foreign correspondents of the era from the mid-1920s through 1940s. Hired by Edward R. Murrow to report for CBS News, he spent years living in and covering Europe, with much time spent in Germany where he recorded the rise of Adolph Hitler and the Nazis – aka: the National Socialists. Eventually he would record his experiences in a series of bestselling books, one of the most prominent a thousand-plus page tome titled The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany. In which Shirer, who died in 1993 – when Marie Harf was barely a teenager – discusses exactly what Marie Harf believes is the answer to violence-inclined political actors. To wit: jobs.

Again, Ms. Harf’s idea – and her bosses’ idea – is that if the “opportunity for jobs” was available, terrorism would be if not obsolete at least hobbled.

Records Mr. Shirer of jobs in 1936 Nazi Germany:

Hitler was liquidating the past, with all its frustrations and disappointments. Step by step, and rapidly…he was freeing Germany from the shackles of (the World War I-ending Treaty of) Versailles, confounding the victorious Allies and making Germany militarily strong again. This was what most Germans wanted and they were willing to make the sacrifices which the Leader demanded of them to get it: the loss of personal freedom, a Spartan diet (‘Guns before Butter’) and hard work. By the autumn of 1936 the problem of unemployment had been largely licked, almost everyone had a job again and one heard workers who had been deprived of their trade-union rights joking, over their full dinner pails, that at least under Hitler there was no more freedom to starve. ‘Gemeinnutz von Eigennutz!’ (The Common Interest before Self!) was a popular Nazi slogan…(and) there was no doubt that the masses were taken in by the new ‘national socialism’ which ostensibly put the welfare of the community above one’s personal gain.

“ All those jobs [Hitler ensured for his fellow countrymen] did was provide the prosperity that enabled Hitler to build his military – and then to use it in his quest for a thousand-year Reich – resulting in the worst war in human history with civilian and military deaths totaling an estimated sixty million human beings. ”

Shirer also notes that “from February 1933 to the spring of 1937, the number of registered unemployed fell from six million to less than one million.” In other words? By 1936 and 1937 Nazi Germany was brimming with what the nuanced Ms. Harf and her employers see as the answer to Islamic – oops – make that Brand X terrorism. Jobs. Lots and lots of jobs.

And yet? In March of 1936, with all those Germans dining on their “full dinner pails,” Hitler began the first of his military moves that would lead to World War II. He “re-militarized” the Rhineland, sending in 32,000 troops and police into a territory that had been demilitarized by the Versailles Treaty. If, as Hitler himself acknowledged, the French government had challenged him militarily he would have been forced to withdraw….and the road that led to global disaster might have been blocked. But it wasn’t. The French, wobbly and indecisive, flinched. And a fully employed Nazi Germany was rewarded for what in reality was terrorism.

In other words what Marie Harf and her superiors at State and the White House propose as some sort of answer to terrorism has been tried – with Adolph Hitler himself making sure that his fellow countrymen had economic prosperity with lots and lots of jobs. And all those jobs did was provide the prosperity that enabled Hitler to build his military – and then to use it in his quest for a thousand-year Reich – resulting in the worst war in human history with civilian and military deaths totaling an estimated sixty million human beings.

Let it not be forgotten that Osama bin Laden was the son of a billionaire.

And with all that inheritance, the business that bin Laden chose was Islamic terrorism. So too Mohamed Atta, who was at the controls of American Airlines Flight 11 when he ran it into the World Trade Center on 9/11 and had an engineering degree from Cairo University. Bin Laden and Atta were not – are not – alone in being Islamic terrorists who were either rich, well-educated or both.

What is really at play with Harf’s “jobs” answer is nothing more – or less – than 1960s liberalism at play in the world. As the late Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Theodore H. White noted of liberals on foreign policy in his bestselling book on the George McGovern campaign – The Making of the President 1972 – the liberals’ cardinal tenet, long gone from the days of FDR, Truman and JFK, was “War is Bad- and the American military was almost, if not quite, a criminal institution, wasteful and profligate of life and treasure; patriotism was the last refuge of scoundrels, and the adventure in Vietnam ‘immoral.’”

Nothing, say again nothing, has changed with these people. Except that they are now in charge. In fact, Harf’s ultimate State Department boss is John Kerry, the self-same Vietnam vet whose fame rests on a single 1971 appearance as a young lefty vet in front of a Senate Foreign Relations Committee populated and run by “nuanced” liberals who sat placidly in agreement as Kerry said of his fellow veterans that they had:

…personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Ghengis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.

This infamous speech – made ten years before Marie Harf was even born – would eventually launch a campaign by Kerry’s still-angry fellow veterans to defeat his 2004 presidential candidacy – and they succeeded.

Let’s be clear.

Marie Harf is no ditz. She is a smart, accomplished and professional woman – whose political, foreign policy and national security views are marinated in sixties liberalism. It is unlikely that someone with a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Indiana University (with those concentrations in Jewish Studies and Russian and Eastern European Studies) and a Masters in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia has never heard of William L. Shirer. Much less is it probable that she doesn’t know Adolph Hitler’s Nazi Germany was filled with jobs for Germans.

What is probable to the point of certainty is that, as with her employers, Marie Harf is a disciple of the liberal Gospel of war is bad and its modern leftist corollary – that Islamic radicalism is not the problem.

Marie Harf – like John Kerry decades ago (not to mention both Kerry and Barack Obama right now) – believes that the real problem in the world is America. And even though there is evidence aplenty with both the full-employment, job-rich Nazis of the 1930s and the billionaire Islamic terrorist Osama bin Laden of current day that jobs and a surfeit of money have nothing to do with German empire building or Islamic caliphate restoration, Ms. Harf will hold fast to liberal denial. And think it is sheer brilliance to do so – which is exactly why she resorts to the snooty “nuance” remark.

Make no mistake, this is denial. Liberal denial. And there is nothing nuanced about it, either.

McConnell uses Reid Trick Against Conservatives (more proof of their complicity)

conservativereview.com ^ | 2/27/15 | Gaston Mooney

In the last two years there have been two major attempts by conservatives to defund catastrophic policies. One attempt was Obamacare in October of 2013 and the other attempt was executive amnesty this week.

In both attempts, the Republican House-passed bills were amended in the Senate to reinstate funding for Obamacare and executive amnesty.

In both attempts, the Republican House-passed bills were amended in the Senate to reinstate funding for Obamacare and executive amnesty.

In both cases, there weren’t 60 votes in the Senate to reinstate funding for these policies. So the majority leaders at the time had to resort to procedural chicanery to lower the threshold for reinstating funding to 51 votes.

In both circumstances, the Senate majority leader blocked out conservative amendments in favor of liberal amendments. In both attempts the exact same parliamentary tricks were used to reinstate funding. In the Obamacare fight it was liberal Harry Reid using the trick to reinstate Obamacare funding. In the executive amnesty fight it was newly elected Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who today used the exact same parliamentary trick to reinstate funding for Obama’s executive amnesty with 51 votes instead of 60.

The only difference was one majority leader was labeled Republican and the other labeled Democrat, but they both took the exact same course of action to restore funding for a major Obama priority that will change our country forever.

Let’s roll the tape back to November 2014 when McConnell issued a press release regarding Obama’s forthcoming executive amnesty order:

If President Obama acts in defiance of the people and imposes his will on the country, Congress will act. We’re considering a variety of options. But make no mistake. When the newly elected representatives of the people take their seats, they will act. – Mitch McConnell 11/20/2014

Well it looks like a mistake was made. Because there are numerous reports that Congress is acting, but to fully fund the executive order that was “in defiance of the people.”

While we are looking at McConnell quotes, we would be remiss not to bring back this one regarding the effort to repeal Obamacare:

The Chief Justice said it's a tax. Taxes are clearly what we call reconcilable. That's the kind of measure that can be pursued with 51 votes in the Senate. If I'm the leader of the majority next year, I commit to the American people that the repeal of Obamacare will be job one. -- Mitch McConnell 7/1/2012

Now that McConnell is Majority Leader and no longer needs voters his tune has changed.

And then there is the news this week that the Senate parliamentarian may rule that Obamacare repeal can’t be pursued with 51 votes. The piece has one interesting tidbit referring to McConnell:

The Kentucky Republican has also refused to commit to using reconciliation on ObamaCare. Last fall, McConnell appeared to downplay expectations on a 51-vote strategy, telling Fox News that it would take 60 votes and a presidential signature to nullify the healthcare law.

Now that McConnell is Majority Leader and no longer needs voters his tune has changed.

What we have here is classic evidence of RINO Rules #1 and #8, Bait-&-Switch and Preemptive Surrender.

U.S. military ‘hostile’ to Christians under Obama; morale, retention devastated

By Jacqueline Klimas - The Washington Times - Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Soon there may only be atheists in the foxholes.

Christians are leaving the U.S. military or are discouraged from joining in the first place because of a “hostile work environment” that doesn’t let them express their beliefs openly, religious freedom advocates say.

Michael Berry, senior counsel at the Liberty Institute, a Texas-based legal organization dedicated to defending religious liberty in America, said recent high-profile cases of military chaplains facing punishment for private counseling sessions that reflected the teachings of their religion could cause devout Americans who are qualified for military service to think twice about joining the military.

In December, a chaplain for a Ranger training battalion received an administrative letter of concern after a soldier complained that he advocated Christianity and used the Bible during a mandatory unit suicide-prevention training session. The Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers said the chaplain “used his official position to force his personal religious beliefs on a captive military audience” in an article the group posted on its website. And, last month, a Navy chaplain was removed from his post and may lose his career after some sailors complained about his private counseling, in which he reportedly advocated against homosexuality and sex outside of marriage.

The military had 2,837 active-duty chaplains as of December 2014 but recent ... more >
Mr. Berry represents both chaplains in question.

“People of faith are going to stay away from the military,” said Mr. Berry in an interview with The Washington Times.“I can’t tell you how many moms and dads I’ve spoken to who say, ‘My son or daughter wants to join the military, [but] in light of what you’ve described, I’m not sure I want to let them join the military anymore,’ and I don’t blame them. I would have serious reservations about my own kids joining,” Mr. Berry said.

Douglas Lee, president of the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, whose job it is to find people who want to be chaplains and make sure they’re also qualified to serve in the military, said growing religious hostility within the military is making it harder for him to find potential recruits and for the armed forces to maintain the chaplains it does have.

“I know people who get out, officers and chaplains, who’ve said, ‘I can’t serve the way I want to in this environment,’” said Mr. Lee, who also served as an Army chaplain. “People who’ve said, ‘Because of the religious liberty challenges I see, I think I’ll serve somewhere else.’”

Not being able to recruit or retain these individuals is very dangerous from a national security standpoint, said Mr. Berry, because they could be the military’s next group of leaders, but will never serve because they don’t think they’re welcome.

“We all used to sit around and talk about planning on spending 20 years, but at some point enough is enough,” he said.

Mr. Berry said he thinks the “hostile work environment” that is forcing the most religious persons out of the military is only getting worse, and that while in the past problems were mainly in the Air Force, religious liberty issues have spread throughout all the services.

“The problem is getting worse, not better, despite our efforts,” he said. “There is a culture [of] hostility [toward] religion in the military right now.”

Travis Weber, director of the Center for Religious Liberty at the Family Research Council, said he’s seen a recent uptick and pattern of Christians facing persecution for religious expression.

Speaking at historically black Tuskegee University commencement exercises last Saturday, first lady Michelle Obama told a crowd of bright-eyed graduates : “The road ahead is not going to be easy. It never is, especially for folks like you and me.”

Let’s pause for a moment to remember that the speaker went to Chicago’s prestigious Whitney Young magnet school, then to Princeton, then to Harvard, then on to a rather mysterious six-figure job at the University of Chicago, which I’m sure was totally unrelated to her husband’s political work.

Next, she was off to the White House, proceeding to globe-hop to places like Cambodia, where, in March, she booked 85 hotel guest rooms at a cost of $242,500 for 33 minutes of public speaking. This was a drop in the bucket, of course, compared to the estimated $44 million in taxpayer-funded vacations she and her husband have racked up over the years.

“There will be times,” the first lady continued, “when you feel folks look right past you, or they see just a fraction of who you really are. … My husband and I [have] both felt the sting of those daily slights throughout our entire lives — the folks who crossed the street in fear of their safety; the clerks who kept a close eye on us in all those department stores; the people at formal events who assumed we were the ‘help’ — and all those who questioned our intelligence, our honesty, even our love of this country.”

It reveals a lot about the mind of Michelle Obam
a, who apparently assumes that the only reason you could possibly criticize her or the president is that you are a racist.

Jewish neighborhood in Chicago hires off-duty cops to protect against anti-Semitic attacks: Chicago cops criticize it

By Thomas Lifson

americanthinker.com

It’s come to this. Not only in Paris and Malmo, but right here in the United States of America, Orthodox Jewish communities feel besieged and are paying for security forces that the police cannot or will not provide. And the police (those not getting the after hours pay) are unhappy. Benjamin Woodard of DNAinfo reports:

After a series of attacks and anti-Semitic threats, Jewish families in West Rogers Park have lined up their own security force of off-duty Chicago police officers to patrol the neighborhood.
But the neighborhood's top police officers are unhappy about the move, saying they don't want residents to get a false sense of security.

The armed officers set up outside Jewish institutions and use personal cars to drive through a 16-block chunk of West Rogers Park during the weekly Sabbath and holidays when the Orthodox community members typically don't carry phones or drive.

Resident David Kamish, 41, organized the patrols and collects $25 a month from more than 25 families to pay the officers. The project's budget is currently $800 a month and goes exclusively to pay off-duty officers assigned to the Rogers Park Police District, he said.

The perceived threats are more than imaginary:

On April 19, two people were robbed at gunpoint about 1:40 a.m. in the 3000 block of West Jerome Avenue, he said. The couple was walking from a nearby party when a black SUV pulled up and a man with a gun demanded their belongings.

The incident is under investigation, Sisk said.

On April 27, a synagogue on Morse Avenue and the Bernard Horwich Jewish Community Center on Touhy Avenue — where the Tuesday meeting was held — received suspicious letters filled with baking soda, according to Sisk.

Three other Jewish organizations in the suburbs also received letters, and the FBI and Department of Homeland Security were investigating, he said.

"Luckily it was a hoax, but what it did do was invoke a sense of fear, and that's what they’re trying to do," Sisk said. "And then that fear can overcome you like a tidal wave — we don’t want to see fear overcome this community."

Glatz said those letters contained notes with Arabic writing and an image of what appeared to be an Islamic radical fighter.

But Chicago cops are unhappy:

District Cmdr. Roberto Nieves hosted a special CAPS meeting with Ald. Debra Silverstein (50th) Tuesday night to address the patrols, which began two weeks ago.

"It was brought to our attention there was a group of citizens in the area that don't feel the police are serving the community the best we can," said Sgt. Shawn Sisk, who leads the district's community policing office. "We can't stop that from happening; however, we're not going to support it. We don’t want that to send a false sense of security to the neighborhood."

Somehow, I doubt that a false sense of security is at risk. Orthodox Jews feel particularly vulnerable during Sabbath observances because their religion forbids them the use of any device, including cell phones, so they would be unable to call police in the event of attacks. West Rogers Park Jews are not about to sit idly by and play the role of victims. Good for them.

Harf: We’re All ‘Totally Perplexed’ by NYT Story on Iran’s Increased Nuclear Stockpile (Video)\

Washington Free Beacon ^ | June 2, 2015 2:46 pm | Andrew Kugle

State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said she was “perplexed” by a New York Times story Tuesday on Iran’s 20 percent increase in nuclear fuel over the past 18 months.

The United States has been in negotiations with Iran for a final deal about their nuclear program. The International Atomic Energy Agency issued a report on Friday that documented an increase of Iran’s nuclear fuel stockpile.

A reporter asked Harf if Iran’s increased stockpiles has complicated the current negotiations.

“Not at all. Our team read that story this morning and was quite frankly perplexed because the main contentions of it are totally inaccurate,” Harf said.

Harf explained why she felt that way.

“First, the notion in the story that western officials or U.S. officials involved were unaware of this issue or not understanding of what this entails is just absurd,” Harf said. “Under the JPOA (Joint Plan of Action), Iran can fluctuate its numbers in terms of their stockpile. They can go up and down as long as at the end of fixed date they are back down below a number.”

Iran’s increase in its nuclear stockpile during the negotiations goes against what White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said during a White House briefing on March 2.

“So what we also know is that Iran has decided to engage in a set of serious negotiations, that previously Iran had just used diplomatic negotiations as cover to try to make progress on their nuclear program,” Earnest said. “But in the context of these talks, we’ve actually succeeded in not just halting Iran’s progress as it relates to their nuclear program but actually rolling it back in several key areas, including reducing and eliminating their stockpile of highly enriched uranium. So I think the evidence indicates that this sanctions regime has been effective.

Harf said that this is not a concern because Iran agreed to reduce their stockpile when the agreement gets implemented.

“What matters is that they [Iran] have committed already, and we said publicly to reducing their stockpile whenever this implemented 300 kilograms,” Harf said. “The notion that this is some big issue of concern of negotiation is more manufacturing a controversy than actual reality. Everyone who read that story this morning was totally perplexed by it.”

The Institute for Science and International Security analyzed the question of whether Iran could meet its obligations regarding 5 percent low enriched uranium, and authors David Albright and Serene Kelleher-Vergantini assessed that “Iran has fallen behind in its pledge to convert its newly produced LEU hexafluoride into oxide form. There are legitimate questions about whether Iran can produce all the requisite LEU oxide … By the end of June, in order to meet its commitment under the JPA, Iran must finish converting the 2,720 kg of LEU into oxide and introduce into the EUPP and convert into oxide, 1,106 kg of 3.5 percent LEU hexafluoride produced over the last several months (plus the few hundred kilograms of LEU to be produced in late May and June 2015). Thus, Iran has clearly fallen behind in its pledge under the JPA.”

Revealed: Rachel Dolezal sued Howard University for … discriminating against her because she’s white
..........................................................
Hotair ^ | 06/15/2015 | AllahPundit

This was in 2002, before the “transition.”

According to a Court of Appeals opinion, Dolezal’s lawsuit “claimed discrimination based on race, pregnancy, family responsibilities and gender.” She alleged that Smith and other school officials improperly blocked her appointment to a teaching assistant post, rejected her application for a post-graduate instructorship, and denied her scholarship aid while she was a student.

The court opinion also noted that Dolezal claimed that the university’s decision to remove some of her artworks from a February 2001 student exhibition was “motivated by a discriminatory purpose to favor African-American students over” her.

As detailed in the court opinion, Dolezal’s lawsuit contended that Howard was “permeated with discriminatory intimidation, ridicule, and insult.”

She lost the suit but Dolezal’s issues with Howard were well known to her family. Her history with the school is fascinating, in fact, and may be a window onto why she began to try to pass as black in the first place. She got a full scholarship to Howard for her art, which specialized in portraits of African-Americans. The school, her father claims, “took her for a black woman” because of her subject matter although she presented herself as white at the time and wouldn’t begin to change her appearance until years later.

Turns out things weren’t always easy for a white student on campus:

[Rachel’s brother] Ezra believes the only reason his sister would change her identity was due to the racism she claimed to have encountered at Howard University, where she graduated with her master’s degree in fine art in 2002.

Rachel, he added, would often complain that she was treated poorly as one of only a few white students on a mostly black campus.

“She used to tell us that teachers treated her differently than other people and a lot of them acted like they didn’t want her there,” Ezra said. “Because of her work in African-American art, they thought she was a black student during her application, but they ended up with a white person.”

He said that the experience made her angry, and it was then that Rachel started being “hateful to white people.”

She ended up “self-hating,” he claims, which, if true, helps explain the psychological pressure to “become” black. A bit more detail courtesy of a former Howard student:

While nobody doubted [Dolezal’s] racial identity [at Howard], the former student told BuzzFeed News that some faculty members were critical of the motivations behind her work. She noted one professor specifically: Tritobia Benjamin, who was well known in the art world as an authority on black female artists.

“Dr. Benjamin was very critical of Rachel,” the former student told BuzzFeed News, because although she was white, she “captured the black body in her paintings,” particularly black men.

So imagine you’re Rachel Dolezal, having grown up with adopted brothers and sisters who are black, having married a black man, having focused your art on African-American subjects, having applied and been accepted to Howard University, and then discovering that you’re still not black enough to be fully accepted in the cultural and academic circles you move in. Part of the reason she changed her appearance doubtless was sincere identification with and admiration for black culture, but partly too it now seems like an act of desperation to assimilate as completely as she wished. She was caught in an authenticity trap, a ludicrous phony when she tried to pass as black and a “problematic” white artist exploiting black subjects when she didn’t.

Via Mediaite, here’s Whoopi Goldberg wondering why, if a man can sincerely feel like he’s a woman, Rachel Dolezal can’t sincerely feel like she’s black, a question conservatives have been asking for the past four days. Note too Whoopi’s joke near the end about how she’s fine with Dolezal’s new identity so long as she’s prepared for “everything that comes with that.” I asked that question this morning. What if Dolezal is prepared for it? What if she prefers to live as a black woman even if that means experiencing prejudice? If race is a social construct and the touchstone of that construct in America is oppression, why shouldn’t a white woman who’s willing to endure it because of her appearance, with no intention of changing that appearance, be treated as authentic?

Seattle Police Dept Suspends all Cases involving Rachel Dolezal

Rachel Dolezal has admitted to filing numerous police reports as the victim of threats and hate crimes.

The decision came one day after Dolezal's claims of harassment and race came under internationally scrutiny with the help of the internet.

SPD tweeted that all cases involving the leader of the NAACP in Spokane were suspended.

"If new information comes to light we can investigate that information," wrote SPD leaders.

Rachel Dolezal has admitted to filing numerous police reports as the victim of threats and hate crimes. She told officers she believed letters received in the NAACP PO Box were threats directed at her and her sons.

When Dolezal reported a letter sent to her in March, it was the ninth hate crime in less than a decade for her.

A police report filed in March questioned how hate mail ended up in the PO Box for the Spokane chapter of the NAACP. On Wednesday, the Spokane Police Department released an eleven page report into their findings thus far.

Spokane NAACP President Rachel Dolezal claimed she found an envelope with pictures of lynchings and references to local cases concerning race in March.

The envelope containing the letter was found in the NAACP mailbox at the Rosewood Post Office along North Monroe.

However, investigators later noticed important marks missing from the package.

Detectives said the hate mail did not have a stamp or barcode. KREM

It was delivered to a post office box. But it did not have a date stamp or barcode according to an on-going police report by SPD.

Postal officials told SPD officers that a letter or package would never be put in a mail box purposefully without those things even if it was hand delivered to the post office. Postal workers said it is possible that the letter could have gotten stuck to another letter and thus missed the scanner and postal marking. But they said the chances of this happening were extremely low.

Staff said the only other way for a unprocessed letter to land in a PO Box would be if it were placed there by someone with a key or a USPS employee was involved.

Security cameras at the Rosewood Post Office were not working at the time the letter was received according to the police report. But police said they have ruled out postal employees as suspects.

WATCH: A look at what was inside the envelope

Rachel Dolezal said she does not believe anyone within the NAACP could be responsible.

Forensic specialists processed the mail in question. They found numerous smudges according to the police report, and one partial print. Dolezal admitted to opening the letter. As of March 4, forensic specialists had planned to pull Dolezal's print and compare it to the partial.

Police are still processing the envelope as well as its contents for any clues to help identify who sent it. At the time she reported the letter, Dolezal told officers that most of these types of incidents were caused by people affiliated with right wing groups in our area.

Representatives from the NAACP said that all mail sent to their PO Box has been automatically forwarded to their new location since it opened in January. But, Dolezal reported receiving the letter at the PO Box after that move.

In May, Dolezal claimed she had received another racially charged letter.

She said the latest one looked like it is from the same person. Dolezal said she wrapped the letter in a grocery bag to avoid getting fingerprints on it so it can be given to detectives. It also made reference to the first letter and was signed 'War Pig' according to Dolezal. She told officers that she had heard the term "War Pig" and she believed that they are a hate group associated with meth dealers and that they are violent, according to police records.

The second letter was sent to the NAACP's Downtown Spokane office.

Previous Threats No Suspects Found

KREM 2 News has covered Dolezal previously for work in human rights and when she had received opposition in North Idaho and Spokane. She said she has been the victim of burglary, death threats and in two cases, nooses left on her property.

2010:

Rachel Dolezal resigned from her position as the Director of Human Rights Education Institute in Kootenai County in July 2010.

She claimed she had been the target of discrimination. Dolezal told KREM 2 News that was why she had decided to leave.

Dolezal took the position in 2008.

Within her time at the Human Rights Education Institute, police investigated hate crimes targeting Dolezal twice. Nobody was ever found or arrested.

In June of 2010, she claimed a noose was found at her North Idaho home.

"A lot goes through my head in terms of being a mother and community member, just assessing and reassessing what kind of stand I'm taking and why, and reevaluating what that means in terms of counting the cost, " Dolezal said in an interview at the time with KREM 2 News.

2009:

"It is disappointing more than surprising to see again that human beings are capable of the worst and not the best," Dolezal said on September 23. Dolezal claimed a noose was also found at her home in September 2009. She lived in Spokane at the time, so officers with the Spokane Police Department investigated the claim.

The week prior, Dolezal reported that someone had burglarized her home.

Family Questions RachelTroy, Montana

A recent investigation into racially charged threats made toward the president of the NAACP chapter in Spokane have raised questions beyond who made the threats.

On Thursday, Rachel Dolezal's parents claimed she had been deceiving people.

Ruthanne and Larry Dolezal said Thursday that they want people to know the truth including that their daughter is Caucasian. The Dolezals sat down with KREM 2 News and said their daughter is specifically German and Czech.

Ruthanne and Larry Dolezal said their daughter has always identified with the African American culture and had black siblings who were adopted. They said she went to school in Mississippi and was part of a primarily African American community.

The Dolezals said Rachel married and later divorced a black man. They said after the divorce in 2004 Rachel began identifying differently. She started claiming to be partially African American and the daughter of bi-racial parents. They said they have noticed her change in physical appearance but do not know how she did so.

"Rachel has wanted to be somebody she's not. She's chosen not to just be herself but to represent herself as an African American woman or a biracial person. And that's simply not true," said Ruthanne Dolezal.

The Dolezals said they do not have a problem with Rachel advocating for a civil rights group for African Americans, rather that she is being deceptive about it.

Rachel's parents said she distanced herself from them and has not talked to them recently.

The same day her parents were interviewed, Rachel Dolezal told KREM 2 News that she does not speak to her parents because of an on-going legal issue.

"There is a lawsuit that's been going on for almost a year, once I supported my sister and allegations against her older brother," said Rachel.

Rachel said she does not consider her biological parents her real parents.

KREM 2 News asked to address the public sentiment that she misrepresented her race.

"I can understand that. And like I said, it's more important to me to clarify that to the black community, and with my executive board, than it really is for me to explain it to a community that I quite frankly don't think understands the definitions of race and ethnicity," said Dolezal.

A long-time friend of Dolezal spoke out on her behalf Friday. Kass Welchlin has been friends with Dolezal for 16 years and met her at the church they both attended in Jackson, Mississippi.

"Rachel is the type of person that identifies with all of her heritage -- from the beginning of time, from now, from the last 50 years to the last 500 to the last 1,500. She is a very intelligent woman," said Welchin.

He added that she is being shed in the wrong light.

City InvestigatesSpokane’s Police Ombudsman Commission

The allegations that Rachel Dolezal has been misrepresenting her race could have repercussions when it comes to her position on Spokane's Police Ombudsman Commission.

City of Spokane officials said they are investigating whether she may have violated any city policy or code of ethics when she applied to lead the commission.

The commission was formed last fall with Dolezal as the group's leader.

The application asked for the race or ethnicity of the person applying. Dolezal said she believed it was an optional choice. But, city officials said she still checked four boxes on the application, including Black/African American, White and Native American/Alaska Native.

Mayor Condon selected Dolezal as the leader of the commission. City staff said race was a factor during selection.

"It certainly could have been a consideration at that point," said Brian Coddington of the City of Spokane.

Staff said they hope to have an update on the investigation early next week.

NAACP releases statement on DolezalFriday, June 12, 2015

The National Associated for the Advancement of Colored People released a statement Friday regarding the controversy surrounding Rachel Dolezal's racial identity.

Dolezal's parents said Thursday that she is a Caucasian woman and has been misleading the public for years, claiming that she is the child of biracial parents instead of Caucasian parents. Dolezal later came out and expressed that she and her parents do not speak due to ongoing legal issues.

On Friday, the former president of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP said anyone can be a leader in the organization.

"I didn't look into her background or anything. She won the election and I moved on," said James Wilburn, former president.

Wilburn said he did have concerns about the effect this controversy could have on the NAACP.

"I'm concerned about the branch and it's credibility and it's viability -- if it can survive this," said Wilburn. "It's like an old African proverb; when elephants fight, the grass gets killed. And in this case the branch is the grass."

Wilburn also said he received threats during his two years as president.

"I didn't make a big deal of it," said Wilburn.

Wilburn said it did not matter to him what race the leader of the NAACP is, especially in a county like Spokane with a small percentage of African Americans. He said his concern is that the issue could harm the NAACP's relationships with the City of Spokane and Spokane Public schools.

"I'm doing what I can to not let it hinder or hurt the organization," said Wilburn. "It's the oldest, boldest, biggest, baddest, civil rights organization in the history of this nation."

He said his main concern is preserving the credibility and viability of the organization. KREM

Dolezal was a regular participant of many NAACP events.

Videos show her hosting a national trend called "Moral Mondays" at the Spokane branch. The five week series focused on justice issues facing Spokane.

During the talks she referenced the hate crimes and death threats she said she and others in the NAACP received. She also referred to being part of an ethnic group.

"Also having the idea of citizenship, in terms of character being questioned and criminality being associated with with our people," said Dolezal at one of the talks.

TWEETS: People respond to NAACP incident with #wrongskin

Earlier in the day, the NAACP released the following statement:

"For 106 years, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has held a long and proud tradition of receiving support from people of all faiths, races, colors and creeds. NAACP Spokane Washington Branch President Rachel Dolezal is enduring a legal issue with her family, and we respect her privacy in this matter. One's racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership. The NAACP Alaska-Oregon-Washington State Conference stands behind Ms. Dolezal's advocacy record. In every corner of this country, the NAACP remains committed to securing political, educational, and economic justice for all people, and we encourage Americans of all stripes to become members and serve as leaders in our organization.

Hate language sent through mail and social media along with credible threats continue to be a serious issue for our units in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation. We take all threats seriously and encourage the FBI and the Department of Justice to fully investigate each occurrence."

Late Friday night Dolezal released the following statement to members of the Spokane Chapter of the NAACP:

"As you probably know by now, there are questions and assumptions swirling in national and global news about my family, my race, my credibility, and the NAACP. I have discussed the situation, including personal matters, with the Executive Committee. I support their decision to wait until Monday to make a statement. the Executive team asked that I also release my response statement at the same time, which will be during the 7-9 p.m. monthly membership meeting.

The national and regional NAACP have recommended this same strategy. I ask that all members of the NAACP respect this process as well. there are many layers to this situation. The Executive Committee would like to open up to paid members the opportunity to have questions submitted by email. The Executive Committee would vet and then choose which questions to address after my personal statement. My sons and I would appreciate your thoughts, prayers and support during the interlude. I will see you Monday!"

EWU Releases StatementDolezal Teaches Part-Time

Eastern Washington University released a statement Friday regarding Rachel Dolezal after news broke of her portraying herself as African American when she was born Caucasian.

EWU said in a statement that Dolezal is a part-time instructor employed on a quarter-by-quarter basis and that Dolezal is not a professor. However, when viewing Dolezal's faculty biography page, she is listed as a quarterly professor at the university.

According to EWU's website, Dolezal holds a Master's degree from Howard University, and has taught The Black Woman's Struggle, African and African American Art History, African History, African American Culture, and Intro to Africana Studies all at EWU. The biography states that her research focuses on the intersection of race, gender and class in the "contemporary Diaspora with a specific emphasis on Black women in visual culture."

As of Friday morning, Dolezal was slated to speak at EWU's graduation ceremony for the students in the Africana Studies department. Dolezal did not give the speech.

The director of the Africana Studies program said they decided earlier Friday that Dolezal would be a distraction, and that they wanted to keep the attention on the students graduating.

"What we wanted to do tonight -- and she felt the same way -- is what's the best support action we can take to make it their night," said Director Scott Finnie. "This is their completion and their families are here. So we felt it would be best -- she agreed -- for her not to come."

Some students disagreed. They said they voted Dolezal to be the key note speaker and some were upset she would not be attending.

"Whether she's white, black, Asian, whatever her racial identity is, I think that should not be the main focus. The main focus should be her leadership ability and what she has accomplished in the Spokane area," said Satori Butler, the President of the Black Student Union at EWU.

EWU's site states that Dolezal's passion for civil rights was influenced by the time she spent in Mississippi, where she advocated for equal rights and participated in community development. It also states that Dolezal had been appointed by the Mayor of Spokane to serve as a police commissioner for the Office of the Police Ombudsman to oversee fairness and equity in law enforcement.

According to EWU, Dolezal's experiences include working with African dance, culinary arts, ethnic hair styling, modeling, managing a political campaign, and has 14 years of experience as an exhibiting artist.
