As part of my research on ATMEL I went back to this thread during the time when atmel started to fall in 1997. The thread was very bullish at that time (as it was during the last rally) so I went through news on www.techweb.com to see if could find a reason why the stock was falling. It was interesting to note that INTEL was saying it could not meet its obligations in terms of FLASH but when atmel and AMD were questioned they said they saw no supply problems in their markets. There was one small article on asian companies selling more memory into the market. Ultimately it seems that some people know well ahead of time that things are getting ugly and they dump the stock. Whether it is Atmel telling them or not I am not sure but somebody always seems to know something (somebody being analysts/brokerage houses). Many of the analysts that have buys on Atmel have investment banking divisions with large investments in Atmel convertibles on the line, so the value of their opinion is questionable. It was interesting to note that as Atmel was falling some analysts were issuing strong buys (at 43-45) with high 60 targets. Maybe the current pessimism is the buy signal we have all been looking for!!!!

Andrew Cartwright for what it is worth!
