You simply do not understand what the officer's job is. Once the initial encounter was had, Wilson's job was to keep his eyes on Brown, so that once the backup arrives he could be arrested. In the meantime, Brown decided to attack Wilson. It then becomes his responsibility to defend himself and his weapon.

There is no ambiguity. Had Wilson done as you said, he would not have been following correct police procedure.

He'd already called for backup. Driving away ... he should be fired if he does that.
