"American Atheists, an activist group based in Cranford, New Jersey, launched numerous billboards Monday featuring a little girl and her mock letter to Santa. It reads, “Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is to skip church! I’m too old for fairy tales.”

GOOD STUFF!! Thanks for posting. I gave it a "REC" :-)

  1. Think Progress Uncovers Religious Right’s Pro-Eel Agenda
  2. by Matthew Schmitz12 . 3 . 14

The religious right—long noted for its radical agenda of suggesting there might be something wrong with killing the unborn and that marriage might have something to do with sexual difference—has now opened a new front in the culture wars: Support for eels.

According to a report at Think Progress:

“Social conservatives are worried about some decline in social morays and norms.”*

As with most complaints by the religious right, this is a matter of shrill exaggeration. There are some two hundred different species of moray eels and while many species of fish are declining, the population of eels appears relatively stable. With so many populations in danger, why would the religious right stand up for this predatory and entitled class? Once again, culture warriors are playing the persecution card, casting the privileged as victims.

A possible reason for this unexpected move is the theocratic attempt to govern modern life by verses from the Bible. The Book of Job says:

Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee? Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants? Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears? Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.

Christianists now want all Americans to “lay their hands” upon the moray eel, which they apparently believe to be the biblical Leviathan. It’s a disturbing new part of the Reconstructionist agenda advocated for by R. J. Rushdoony, Michelle Bachmann, and your nice grandma who once took you to church.

That conservatives are worried only about “social” morays indicates this act’s hypocrisy. According to trusted reference source Wikipedia, “Morays hide from humans in crevices and would rather flee than fight. They are shy and secretive.”

Why the concern only for “social” morays? Aren’t introverted and bashful morays equally deserving of protection? Once again, we see the narrow nature of the religious right’s agenda. Even when conservatives offer support for a group, they exclude its most vulnerable members.

*Morays” are not to be confused with mores.” The latter word refers not to serpentine sea creatures but to social customs.

Update: In an apparent capitulation to the right-wing outrage machine, Think Progress has changed its mention of “morays” to “mores.” It is disappointing to see this progressive beacon bow to a Koch-orchestrated smear campaign. The rest of us, however, should not hesitate to speak the truth about the religious right’s pro-eel agenda.
