It is not exactly clear why the number of vineyards declined subsequently. Some have put it down to an adverse change in the weather which made an uncertain enterprise even more problematic.

History says that grapes do not grow as abundantly as they did hundreds of years ago in the british isles when the climate was warmer, much warmer than it is today.
