I have no problem doing what you described with my Win 8.1 machine. However your problem reminds me of older systems (e.g. VIsta and earlier) where you must toggle an external display using Display in Control Panel. Normally you have 3 options: local PC display, external display or both. In most machines you toggle these 3 choices by pressing both Fn (lower left corner of keyboard) and F5 (upper area of keyboard). I'm not sure if HDMI may be handled differently but I don't believe trying the above will harm anything to try. Good luck!
