Nice projection: "What was biggest on the backbone in 1997? Switching-specifically, Ethernet switching, which net managers will continue to deploy as an easy way to boost bandwidth. But ending the discussion there would be to overlook what looms as 1998's main event: the significant rollout of gigabit Ethernet and multilayer switches.

"You'll see a change next year in what's being sold," says Stuart Melnitsky, senior analyst at the Yankee Group (Boston).
"Gigabit Ethernet will bite into the market for ATM switches, and even fast Ethernet. We have a sense that a lot of users have been waiting for developments with gigabit Ethernet."
