The rest prolly depends on the rate of rainfall, and, maybe, in places on the edge of the Bay, the tides. Excellent point. Didn't even dawn on me that they'd be clogged from all the non-rains.There's about 6% more water in the air than when I was a kid, cuz air temperature is up. That means heavier rains, when they fall. This year has been pretty bad thruout the country. SW has been hammered by rain from Baja hurricanes. Pensicola, Fla. got something like 2 feet in a day. Add to that the fact that the Jet Stream is developing periods of stalling, and a lot of rain can fall. Thanks for this....again, all this is beyond above my pay grade....Our biggie was before dams, but dams don't do much to control floods once they fill up.I was 3 when this happened, so I don't remember it very well... Remembering the Great California Flood of 1862 LOL....Youngin! The deluge raised the level of the San Francisco Bay several inches, and anglers pulled freshwater fish out for months while the inundation subsided. Trees and telegraph poles vanished beneath frothy currents. Steam-powered paddleboats dodged wreckage and dead cattle while delivering vital supplies and rescuing the survivors still clinging to trees or huddled on rooftops. I can't seem , on this new macbook air highlight something deep down the page and get back up to the "quote" icon without erasing the highlight. Very interesting piece...thanks. I only know CA as a state that has very predictable precipitation calendar with bouts of droughts and some heavy rain seasons. I was here 05/06 and I think that was a heavy one. I recall counting the days of straight rain in December--just short of 3 weeks. I had to pull out my lightbox as the deprivation felt like a winter back east. Late 80s, I believe during my first stint here, the state was in a drought. I recall it being the first time that it was not automatic to be served water at a restaurant. Although, I'm quite surprised that during this profound drought that many restaurants in the SF area still automatically serving water.
