Jon, I sent you a post about stores here receiving cases of 1.4GB WDC drives made in June 97.

Hi Ken,
I don't really know what to make of that info, except that it illustrates how long it takes these demand/supply problems to trickle down and work themselves out. I wouldn't have thought that production decisions made in June would be comming back to haunt the sector today. That the drives weren't even packed I guess shows you how desparate they are to get rid of these things. Or is that the traditional way WDC moves its drive to the super stores? Seems more like rejects from the box makers.

Ken - **OFF TOPIC**

I spoke to Bob Blair at WDC earlier this week:
He said they are currently shipping the 1.3GB, 1.7GB and
2.1GB/platter drives. They are not shipping the 1GB/platter
drive. Therefore, the smallest capacity DD they are shipping is
the AC11200(1.28GB) is that what you are talking about? Actually, it came out in vol in Jan97... There may be some drives left in the channel, but they were not produced this Q

If you look on the WDC website, it'll give you the current list of products:
wdc.com

You can work it out. The list includes only 1.3, 1.7, and 2.1GB head drives. That's what all of the problems are about recently. Blair said they are trying to ramp down the 1.7 and replace it with the 2.1(you can see the capacities cross). They are also ramping down the 1.3GB TFI product. The problems with RDRT and APM are a result of the fact that as of mid Oct WDC expected the 1.3 to be the biggest family of them all this Q(this is where the production cutbacks have come)
