BOJ sells dollars steadily near, below Y127-traders
Tuesday December 16, 11:03 pm Eastern Time

TOKYO, Dec 17 (Reuters) - The Bank of Japan (BOJ) sold dollars persistently around 127 yen and below in Tokyo afternoon
trade on Wednesday, traders said.

The central bank earlier sold dollars at about 129 yen and selling
was also detected at 127.80 yen, traders said, adding that
it was the first time since August 1992
that the BOJ
had sold dollars for yen.

One dealer said the BOJ had sold dollars at 127.50 yen.

Eisuke Sakakibara, Japan's Vice Finance Minister for International Affairs, told Reuters that Japan had taken decisive steps to
cope with an excessive weakening of the yen.

Commenting on market talk of dollar-selling intervention by the
BOJ on Wednesday, he said: ''We have taken decisive measures to
cope with an excessive depreciation of the yen.''

As of 0355 GMT, the dollar stood at 126.05/15 yen after falling
as low as 125.85 yen.
