I can provide a long treatment on the subject of why torture is an abhorrent violation of humanity but at the moment I only have time for this short response to your comment.

If torture isn't effective, why do our enemies practice it whenever they can? Is it because they get a kick out of it, or is it because they can actually get useful information out of POWs? Because it scares the crap out one's enemy. In ancient times in the ME certain "tribes" would lay siege to a city then begin to torture those previously captured which gained no info but put the fear of God into those laid siege to. It was effective to the point where those inside would commit suicide rather than fall into the hands of the enemy once the city fell.
