This is the crux of my problem with this convoluted discussion. It doesn't arise in a personal situation because you treat the perp as a violent enemy, you beat them or kill them to retrieve your loved one. There are no perfect solutions but torture doesn't always provide results, sometimes the tortured person actually doesn't have the information you are looking for. Where does that leave the torturer? The most famous radicals have been subject to torture prior to being radicalized and most people consider that a major factor in turning them into who they are.

I don't know the solution. I just wish the report had been an honest report rather than a political one. It is sad to say, but I have a great deal more confidence in some of the people actually involved in the interrogation than I do in those who made the report, because I know there are some on that committee that will do or say anything for political advantage.

I was talking about it with my son and he made the point, correctly imo, that there are times when you have to do this kind of stuff but the facts need to come out to prevent abuse of the techniques. Unfortunately, I don't think the facts have come out.

Even finding out a person doesn't have the information you're seeking is, itself, obtaining information. I noted in the report that at times the interrogators would report that they didn't believe [whoever] had any useful knowledge on a given subject. If nothing else, it allows them to move on to other potential sources.
