The Ninth Day of Christmas As the dusk engulfs a wonderful December day I had my daughter come up to me and softly say, `Daddy tonight can we do something brand new?' `Sure!' I said, `What would you like for us to do? Gleefully she says, `Lets make a Santa for the door.' `OK!' I said. `We'll need makeup, cotton and more. A Santa's cap, and the old pink blanket from upstairs. Also bring the eyes from one of the old teddy bears.' As she dashed upstairs I turned towards the other way Going to the laundry there an empty bleach jug lay Taking the jug to the kitchen I reach for a sharp knife Knowing soon this simple jug would bring Santa to life Cutting the pout to the bottom across and back up again I could hear my daughter getting the eyes, face and mane Coming down two steps at a time she rushed to my side As I had just returned with glue to hear her as she sighed Laying the jug flat on the table I opened the jar of glue Then carefully I showedher exactly what she should do Leaving I went for scissors as she went on with her task upon my return glue was on the table, her and the mask Chuckling a bit I laid the pink blanket across the glued jug Then trimmed the edges so the blanket was nice and snug Going the cupboard I took food coloring the color of red then forming cotton into a ball we had the nose for the head I let her dip the nose in the coloring then set it aside to dry Slipping the Santa cap over the spout she quietly stood by Setting the jug upright she could see the face taking shape With yarn I made continuous loops so the beard would drape Again she began spreading glue on the bottom of the face Knowing I would have to hurry I increased my looping pace Spreading the loops across the bottom the beard came into view Seeing the jug with face, cap and beard her excitement grew The mustache was a cluster of smaller loops pasted on Taking Barbie lipstick she soon had Santa's red lips drawn Next she put glue above the mustache to attach the nose Stepping back looping the hair she had glued on her clothes Giggling as I shook my head she went right on pasting the eyes I said not a word as I watched her finish, no reason to advise Well it was almost finished except to frame the sides with hair which I laid down the two bundles so she could paste them there Jumping up and down with joy because it appeared to be done I asked her, `Sweetheart one thing is still missing in all this fun?' Looking at her Santa's face she asks, `Daddy what can it be? Well I said. `A little color on his cheeks would look great to me.' Without a word off she runs without a skip or a hop just in a rush Returning she has what she needed, a stick of Barbie special blush With her with tongue slightly out she applies color to the cheeks when finished she takes a small step back to view her techniques Pleased with her homemade Santa she turns to me with a smile `Daddy.' she softly says. `Can I put it in my room for a little while?' `But sweetheart.' I answered. `I thought it was for the front door?' `It was.' she replies. `But now I want it on my chester drawer.' `OK!' I said. `I guess you want to see Santa when you go to bed. Since you did such a fine job in your room we'll put Santa's head.' Reaching down I picked her up giving her a fatherly kiss and hug then I carefully picked up Santa's head we had made from a jug Setting it on her dresser and winding up the Christmas manger She was getting ready for bed in pajamas of the pink power ranger Away in a Manger plays as she kneels saying her bedtime prayers Then jumps into to bed and snuggles up with all her Teddy Bears Tucking her in I gave her a good night kiss and I have to confess I now have a homemade Santa, blind teddy bear and an awful mess Copyright 1997 by Gary Swancey Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year.
