Has anyone experienced how a bear market with high amount of negative sentiment starts?

I was recently reminded of a Soros comment in his book Alchemy of Finance. He basically says that we have had just as many bear markets on negative sentiment as we have on irrational exuberance.

worse in dollars... but if you measure the drop in Oct against this drop and work the percentages relative to the stock price... then I have October's drop being something like 2/100ths of percentage worse.

IOW, the $7.11 drop in the SPY in October off the high of $196.60 was worse than this weeks $7.43 drop off the high of $208.12

just saying.
