You're retroactively projecting modern terms into the past. The founding fathers were almost all Christians, hated taxation, and took pains to protect the public's right to own arms. Not a bunch of liberals.

Did you know that some of the apologists for slavery claimed it was more humane than the "wage slavery" in the north?

jstor.org

In his Cannibals All!, Fitzhugh argued that the antagonism between labor and capital in a free society would result in "robber barons" and "pauper slavery," while in a slave society such antagonisms were avoided. He advocated enslaving Northern factory workers, for their own benefit.

For some Southerners, the situation of Northern workers looked a lot worse than slavery. In fact, they argued, unlike the "wage slavery" of the North, the slavery system in the South provided food, clothing, medical care, and leisure to slaves, caring for them throughout their lives.

Free food, free healthcare, free housing, free clothing ... all for life ... provided by society's plutocrats. All the things liberals love.
