Stalin's alliance with Nazi Germany was one of the biggest blunders in history. Of course, the Russian war dead was magnified because of the Red Army's tactics. You should watch Enemy at the Gates, especially the early scenes where Soviet officers herded unarmed troops at the Germans, shooting some of them themselves to make them charge, telling them to pick up their comrade's weapons when they fell.
