The probability of a gap is much higher at the open than at any other time of the day. By avoiding holding stocks overnight you effectively eliminate the risks of having a position move heavily against you.

That IS one of the Major rules of daytrading.

The premise for holding overnight is much more valid for the position trader who is diversified to a greater extent and can afford to be wrong if one of his positions drops 50% at the open.
