Lifeway just announced the launch of their BASIC PLUS functional food. Here is the report:

Lifeway Foods and GalaGen Launch First Product in Co-Developed Dietary Supplement Line
Basics Plus(TM) Dietary Supplement Includes GalaGen's Proventra(TM) Brand Natural Immune Components
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. and SKOKIE, Ill., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- GalaGen Inc. (Nasdaq: GGEN - news) and Lifeway Foods (Nasdaq: LWAY - news) today announced a product launch in selected Midwest outlets in the U.S. and in Eastern European markets of the new line of supplements developed by the two companies for the estimated $12 billion dietary supplement market.

Basics Plus(TM) dietary supplement product is the first product to emerge from the collaboration in which GalaGen will provide the clinical development required to support claims for new products and Lifeway will be responsible for manufacturing and marketing of the new product line. Basics Plus contains active kefir culture, which are a unique blend of probiotics, and GalaGen's Proventra(TM) brand of natural immune components which GalaGen prepares from the colostrum of dairy cows. Basics Plus is formulated as a smooth, natural fruit-flavored liquid and will be sold in the refrigerated section of health food stores and grocery stores. The product is intended to support the body's natural microflora and to maintain gastrointestinal health.

Robert Hoerr, M.D., Ph.D., GalaGen's President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, ''The launch of Basics Plus is GalaGen's first step in the development of innovative dietary supplement and other nutritional products, as we broaden our focus beyond our pharmaceutical product portfolio. We are excited about this potential for Basics Plus, knowing that Lifeway has access to 80 percent of the health food stores in the U.S. and that its products are quickly finding their way onto grocery store shelves throughout the country.'' Dr. Hoerr continued that this nutrition product initiative represents a logical extension of GalaGen's technology and expertise, given its origins in Land O' Lakes, the large Midwestern dairy cooperative.

''In addition to our presence throughout the United States, we have strong connections in Russia which will enable us to quickly distribute Basics Plus throughout these major markets,'' said Michael Smolyansky, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lifeway Foods. ''The recent completion of our new 46,000 square foot plant has prepared us to meet the strong demand we expect the functional food and dietary supplement product lines will generate around the world.''

Lifeway is America's leading supplier of the fermented dairy beverage known as kefir. The Company markets 12 flavors of kefir and also does a brisk business exporting kefir to Eastern Europe. The Company recently introduced the market's first non-fat kefir and fat-free kefir farmers cheese. Lifeway also markets several varieties of drinkable yogurts, as well as a low-sodium, vegetable seasoning called Golden Zesta. The Company recently launched a low-fat cream cheese substitute, ''Elita,'' and has a number of exciting new products in development.

Diffistat-G is being developed for the treatment and prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, which annually affects more than 400,000 patients in the United States. Pylorlune-G is in preclinical development with the Company's corporate partner, Chiron Corporation [Nasdaq:CHIR - news]. This new press release shows that I don't know everything about this company. Two posts ago I said that LWAY wasn't focusing on exports and here today they say they will be selling 'BASIC PLUS' to Eastern Europe. The CEO did tell me some time ago that they weren't going to increase exports of kefir. That must mean regular kefir. Of course when he said that he knew nothing about Galagen.
I bought some more stock this morning. I may play it short term or hold it long term. Either way I will stick to my original strategy and not touch my large core holding of LWAY which is almost 16 months old now. 2 more and it will be 20% max cap gains. 2 news releases in 2 days is great. Of course the one yesterday was by the FOOLS and not the company.
