No, they didn't. Al Gore and his Dad stayed Democrats. So did Jimmy Carter, who got his start as a segregationist on his local school board. So did Bill Clinton and his political mentor, J William Fulbright. So did Sam Ervin, beloved Watergate committee member. So did Kluxer Robert Byrd.

It was the Democrats move to the left that lost them the south.
