A snake in reality is essentially just one long traveling esophagus/stomach, so is an alligator or even chicken for that matter, all creatures must consume.

And to the same extent so are we, but we have invented extraordinary methods of storing & preserving our
food/energy sources since hitting the ground on our two feet and using our heads more.

From hunting/gathering to domestication & grazing animals saw humans having their food source traveling with them. And the domestication of plants & rise of agriculture by the great rivers for others . Naturally the development of grain storage & food transport, why pottery is so fascinating for this was vital storage technology, look how they adorned & loved them.

You know the story of refrigeration & air conditioning was followed by the discovery & flash freezing by Clarence Birdseye this last century, was a real game changer. As an ardent fish & game fellow he simply copied the Inuit Indians when up living in far north regions & saw them expose their catches on the ice. The Indians knew that flash freezing would make the fish later taste freshest.

The next natural step was transporting & keep food cold & fresh from spoilage & ice was very unreliable, so this fellow Frederick McKinley Jones steps in with the first truck refrigeration units.

This made possible some huge increase of human populations, especially in the urban centers in the later 20th century alone.
