"To Brumar, science begins with a conclusion "

For Brumar, science began on Day 1, and rested forevermore on the following Sat. No equations, and only 7 numbers to deal with.

Actually, that's true of Rat and Weiner Boy: "science begins with a conclusion based on his partisan beliefs"

And the whole treenometers used to be thermometers but they're not anymore thing shows it.

Their proxies which they CLAIM worked for the past thousand years don't work now. So obviously they have to say "something changed." But as you note, they don't know what:

They demonstrate that something changed. They would only be audacious if they kept using them after that change happened. When they determine what that something(s) is, their knowledge will be amazing.
