It's stupid to think nothing changed. It's science to figure out which condition, or series of conditions have changed, and how those changes affected plant physiology, so "something changed" really isn't an acceptable final answer. It's just a stepping stone on the journey to "This is what changed, and this is how it worked.", because scientists are curious people who want answers to questions.
