" I know you're pretending that can happen and you can still live in a place where ordinary people travel by plane and car and use the internet and have TV's and microwaves".

We'll find out. So far, things are nicely on schedule. 2050 is very ambitious; I'm not sure if we can do it, but it is a challenge worthy of the 6th or 8th largest economy in the world.

Intrastate air will be replaced by electric rail. By the time you leave downtown SF, drive an hour to the airport to check in an hour early, and then drive an hour from LAX to downtown LA, you could have gone from downtown LA to downtown SF by rail, and still had time for a mocha and a joint. Replacing the auto fleet will be the hardest.

I have the net and a 42 inch TV and a microwave, and I make more electricity than I use.
