Kai, Santa came early for RAMTRON and IBM - BUY RAMTRON WHILE YOU STILL CAN PAY DIRT FOR RAMTRON - IBM CONTRACT - RAMTRON ESDRAM RATED AS TWICE AS FAST AS INTEL'S PROPOSED RAMBUS STANDARD!!!!! Wednesday December 17, 10:30 am Eastern Time Company Press Release Ramtron Subsidiary and IBM Enter Manufacturing Agreement COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 17, 1997-- Ramtron International Corporation's (NASDAQ:RMTR - news) wholly owned subsidiary, Enhanced Memory Systems, Inc., announced today an agreement with IBM Microelectronics to manufacture the enhanced synchronous dynamic random access memory (ESDRAM(TM)) chip. Under the agreement, IBM will provide Enhanced with a production source for ESDRAM chips. In addition, IBM will be awarded a non-exclusive license to produce and sell ESDRAM chips to its own internal and external markets. Production at IBM's Essex Junction, Vermont facility is expected to begin during the first quarter of 1998. ESDRAM components will be manufactured on IBM's high volume, 16Mbit 0.35 micron DRAM production process using 8-inch wafers. ''IBM is pleased to be working with Enhanced Memory Systems to expand ESDRAM production capacity,'' said Walt Lange, IBM DRAM Marketing Manager. ''We believe that the ESDRAM product will provide our customers an attractive new option in our portfolio of memory products.'' ''This agreement with IBM provides the high volume, low cost product source necessary to rapidly ramp ESDRAM production,'' explains Craig Rhodine, Enhanced vice-president and general manager. ''This will allow us to serve our current design wins in high performance workstation/server, 3-D graphics, communications, disk cache, DSP, and embedded computers during 1998.'' The ESDRAM has been proposed as the SDRAM superset standard at the quarterly Joint Electron Devices Engineering Councils (JEDEC) DRAM meetings in Taiwan in September and Phoenix last week. The 100 MHz ESDRAM product complies with the fastest latency requirements of Intel's PC-100 specification, the standard for 100 MHz SDRAM operation with Pentium(R)-II chipsets. The 133 and 166 MHz ESDRAM products define the timing standard for future faster memory busses using SDRAM. ESDRAM is supported by the VLSI Technology Polaris VCS-164 chipset for the 533 MHz Digital Semiconductor Alpha 21164PC. In this Windows NT workstation/server application, the ESDRAM will generate peak bandwidths of greater than 1.6 Gigabyte/Second and achieve twice the sustained bandwidth as either SDRAM or Direct Rambus. Availability The ESDRAM products are expected to sample during 1Q98, with production planned for 2Q98. Enhanced Memory Systems, Inc. Enhanced Memory Systems develops and markets the EDRAM(R) and ESDRAM(TM) memories, high performance specialty memories that combine DRAM and SRAM on one chip (patent pending). Enhanced is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ramtron International Corporation (NASDAQ:RMTR - news). IBM Microelectronics IBM Microelectronics is a leading supplier of semiconductor components. IBM has manufacturing facilities in the USA, France, Germany, and Japan, including DRAM production capacity in Essex Junction, Vermont. IBM is a leader in the development of new DRAM technology for 64M, 256Mbit and 1Gbit DRAM products.
