PIPELINES / TransCanada to Build Power Plant Near Calstock, Ontario TSE, ASE, ME, VSE, NYSE, WINNIPEG STOCK EXCHANGE SYMBOL: TRP DECEMBER 17, 1997 CALGARY, ALBERTA--TransCanada PipeLines Limited today announced plans to build an $80 million power generation plant at Calstock, Ontario, 30 kilometres west of the town of Hearst, Ontario. The plant, to be built adjacent to a TransCanada natural gas compressor station, will have a nominal rating of 33 megawatts of electricity and will be fired by wood waste and waste heat. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 1998 with service targeted to commence in 2000. The power will be sold exclusively to Ontario Hydro. "This project will provide an economic boost to several communities and companies," said Russell Girling, senior vice-president of TransCanada Energy, a wholly owned TransCanada subsidiary. "In addition, the use of wood waste and waste heat as an energy source is both efficient and environmentally positive because it provides a long-term solution to a wood waste disposal issue in the area," he said. Potter Station Power Co. Inc. of Timmins, Ontario, has been selected by TransCanada as the development and construction contractor for the project. Potter will be responsible for all aspects of the development, design and construction. The project will create numerous jobs during the construction period and 20 permanent jobs. All agreements necessary to proceed with the project are in place. The Calstock project is moving forward after years of dedication and hard work by TransCanada, Ontario Hydro, the town of Hearst, the Hearst Lumbermen's Association, Potter and the Ontario ministries of environment and energy. TransCanada PipeLines Limited is one of North America's leading transporters of natural gas through its energy transmission business. TransCanada also operates complimentary businesses in energy marketing and energy processing in North America and is extending its operations internationally.
