Oracle Continues to Leap Ahead on NT
IDC Survey Shows 223% Oracle NT Growth as Microsoft Loses Marketshare
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle Corp. today announced that they are continuing to gain momentum over Microsoft on NT. The most recent International Data Corp. (IDC) figures for relational database revenues on Windows NT show Oracle(R) universal Data Server's revenue growth at 223 percent over the last year. Similarly, Oracle's marketshare on NT has increased from 24.8 percent in 1995 to 30.3 percent in 1996. Meanwhile, IDC charts a nearly 10 point drop in Microsoft's NT marketshare, slipping from 40 percent to 30.9 percent.

According to the IDC survey, Oracle experienced a $145 million leap in NT-driven revenue in 1996. The recent survey documents Oracle's dramatic growth and Microsoft's corresponding decline. At the end of 1995, Microsoft possessed an industry-leading 40 percent share of the Windows NT database market and generated $105 million in revenues. Oracle was a distant second in 1995, accounting for 24.8 percent of new database installations on that platform and earning $65 million in revenues. IDC's present survey, reflecting the 1996 fiscal year, clearly shows that Oracle has the momentum over Microsoft in the marketplace as their revenues have more than doubled to $210 million compared with Microsoft's $213.8 million.

''The acceptance of Windows NT as a suitable relational database platform and the accompanying surge in database sales during 1996 seems to have caught most of the industry napping,'' said Carl Olofson, IDC's research director, Application Development Tools. ''Microsoft, as expected, has used its leverage as the platform provider to extend distribution of SQL Server, yet the real story here is Oracle. In nearly matching Microsoft's revenue figures for 1996, Oracle has seemingly brushed aside Sybase and Informix, and appears singularly poised to challenge Microsoft for database market leadership on the PC juggernaut's home turf.''

''Oracle has made a tremendous technology commitment to the NT platform and that commitment is enabling our customers and partners to have the best solutions on NT across the enterprise,'' said Mark Jarvis, vice president of System Products Marketing at Oracle Corp. ''IDC's survey clearly reflects that Oracle is on the right path. Oracle will continue to surpass Microsoft on NT by delivering the best products to the marketplace in a much more timely manner.''

Since 1996, Oracle has continued to expand its commitment to the NT operating system through best-of-breed product development, technology initiatives and services geared toward customer and partner success. In addition to market-leading databases, Oracle features a full line of application servers, development tools, legacy integration technology and applications for NT. Oracle has also been working closely with partners to deliver over 1500 packaged solutions for the enterprise and small and medium-sized businesses. REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL - news) today announced that Oracle(R) universal Data Server has surpassed Microsoft SQL Server's marketshare on NT, according to a recent report by leading research firm Dataquest. The independent analyst survey charts steady market gains by Oracle universal Data Server while reflecting a 14 percent plunge in Microsoft's NT marketshare. According to the Dataquest study, Oracle's NT marketshare rose to a market-leading 39.3 percent in 1996, while Microsoft's share dropped to 37.2 percent during the same time period.

The Windows NT database market grew from $172.1 million in 1995 to $454.1 million in 1996 and Dataquest's figures show strong momentum for Oracle in the NT market. ''Oracle is serious about providing the best products on NT, and the Dataquest figures show that our customers believe we are achieving that goal,'' said Mark Jarvis, vice president of System Products Marketing at Oracle Corp. ''Scalable, available and reliable databases are needed to help NT begin to evolve to support the enterprise, and this best-of-breed functionality that is standard with Oracle8(TM) is more than Microsoft SQL Server can offer.''

''Microsoft's Windows NT platform is becoming a popular platform for application deployment which is offering new opportunities for the database suppliers,'' said Carolyn DiCenzo, director of Client/Server Software for Dataquest. ''The fastest growth is in the enterprise space where Oracle has done a great job of reinforcing to consumers its proven track record in this high-stakes arena. In this space customers want not only a strong product, but also services and integration support.''

Since 1996, Oracle has continued to expand its commitment to the NT operating system through best-of-breed product development, technology initiatives and services geared toward customer and partner success.
