Tod;
HSA's (meaning head stack assys) are simply HGAs assembled in to a full stack for assembly into a specified drive. They are difficult simply because of the small parts and the assembly procedure. Proper alignment is critical. You might think that a head co. like Read Rite would welcome the chance for more value added but its tricky enopugh and has yield loss do to handling that at least some folks would rather not do the business. But as you mention, the drive companies are pretty much forcing the head cos. to do it. There is a new company in Penang called Popular Profile that is taking some of this work on but I dont have details. I have heard they have contracts with Applied Magnetics as well as Read-Rite.
