Methinks you're badly misinformed......I don't know what experience you're basing your comment on, but you're wrong....

It is common in engineering, less so in sciences, and far less so in most other fields. But the additional money you'll make in most non-medical fields make it not worthwhile.
It is not just common it is a fact in both physical sciences and engineering.......and you're out of your element with regard to the money that is paid............. The success of PhD's in climbing into higher ranks of a corporation is probably 10x greater for a PhD than a lower degree.... Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of successful Bachelors and Master's people who have done as well as the PhDs, but the odds are not in their favor.....
