The 0.6 billion years before the appearance of life were the years of chemical evolution on Earth, leading to the gradual appearance of life as an emergent phenomenon . Lightning and UV rays from the Sun broke up the simple hydrogen-rich molecules and the fragments combined into increasingly complex molecules. These dissolved in the oceans and moved around, interacting in various ways. Given enough time even a rare event may occur. One such event was the chance emergence of a molecule that could use the smaller molecules floating around in the organic soup to make crude copies of itself . This was the ancestor of DNA, and the rest is history" I have been trying to explain this to Greg or ee in terms of the abortion 'scandal' he pictures at every corner. Star dust is no more a human person than anything else without a brain or consciousness is a human person. Attributes such as DNA, color, size, shape, texture are all irrelevant. Everything is potentially everything--or you and I would not be posting: we would be shining our rays from some far star. Personhood requires self interest. Self-aware entities decide these things. We are the "gods" until further notice. We have GREAT responsibilities--which include all of life. Shallow people don't even include people--not unless you are "chosen". Chosen by whom?? By your family/tribe of course... Oh...and Season's Greetings and a Prosperous and happy New Year to all creatures capable of remarking any self interest or feeling. If it matters to you in any way, then my thoughts are with you. If it doesn't matter to you, then you are still a part of "god" as Spinoza would say...
