Cisco Software Enhancements May Strengthen Customer Base

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) has come out
with enhancements to its router software that some analysts believe could
help the company strengthen its position in the networking market.

In a little-noticed announcement, Cisco said the enhancements enable
Internet service providers to offer various levels of service to their
customers. For instance, an Internet-service company might offer
higher-priority delivery for information that requires it or promise selected
customers fewer delays for Internet traffic. The access provider then could
bill extra for the higher-quality service.

Cisco is the first of the top-tier networking companies to offer this
quality-of-service software, and the company's prevalence in the networking
market could allow it to establish the product as a de facto standard, said
Barbara Ells, an analyst at Zona Research.

Enhancements like this help keep the growth momentum at the company
going, she said.

Other analysts said the enhancements, which Cisco will offer for free, could
help it lock in customers. Cisco said it expects to make money by providing
hardware upgrades so that its routers can run the new software.

Quality-of-service enhancements are a hot topic in the networking industry.
Internet providers are eager to offer differing levels of service and charge
higher prices for the improvements.

In an announcement of the new software on Dec. 3, Cisco said companies
such as @Home Networks; Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd. (HKT);
MCI Communications Corp. (MCIC); Global One, a Sprint Corp. (FON),
France Telecom SA (FTE) and Deutsche Telekom AG (DT) venture; and
UUNet, a division of Worldcom Inc. (WCOM), are helping to test and
deploy the software.
