It would take a lot guess work to figure out what you were seeing in satellite photos of oil storage facilities.

It would also be interesting to see what they would make of oil tankers as their abortive journey takes them in new directions as their cargo is bought and sold. I wonder how they'd tell the difference between crude oil and refined cargos.

They ought to take a look at offshore Singapore, an area where the huge glut of dry cargo ships without cargoes are permanently moored until they are salvaged - or until China suddenly starts adding to their massive stockpiles of iron ore.
