In my daughters Roth with HQH I have FESOX as a value play, ICPHX and GG as hedges against the dollar and GIM for income. I have held these all since 2002. Started buying in 2000. I only have one daughter so all my assets will go to her so it is not exactly a retirement play. The Roth itself is up over 305.74%. One thing is I do pay the fees so there is no money that comes out of the account.

One stock I have owned through out the years is ADM, (I am talking in the 60's) which as you noted a stock that stayed down for many of years. They always have paid a good dividend. The company manages the logistics of moving our grain from the farm to market. They bring in 100 railroad empty cars to town and take out 100 full cars every Monday of the year. My purchases through the years have been at $10 or less a share. Back in the 40's and early 50's my father sold grain to them directly when they were in Minneapolis.

We buy John Deere equipment for the farm and that stock has been a good buy if you buy it when the stock is low.

If one does not need or want income from an asset, reinvesting is a good idea if it makes sense. Like if you own farm land reinvesting your income in more farm land is a good investment since people do have to eat, If you buy when prices are low and do not use debt for purchases this can be a good long term strategy. The land we have was started purchasing 124 years ago and been added to ever since. Never had a year where there was not a profit.
