Judi, here's how I did it: got a USB flash drive and plugged it into the XP. Copied the folder 'documents' from the XP to the flash drive. Plugged the flash drive in the Windows 8.1 computer.
Done. That way the XP does not need to be powered on every time you need a file.

Find out how big a flash drive you need by right clicking 'documents' on the XP and going to 'properties'.

If you have a lot of movies on the XP, a flash drive may not be the best solution, so find out how big 'documents' is first.
