RESEARCH ALERT - Digital estimates said cut

NEW YORK, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Analysts at Goldman Sachs and Salomon Smith Barney cut fiscal 1998
earnings estimates on Digital Equipment Corp, according to market sources familiar with the actions.

-- Goldman Sachs cut its fiscal 1998 earnings per share forecast on Digital to $2.15 from $2.55, the sources
said.

-- the Goldman analyst said that it seemed unlikely Digital will be able to make up
higher-than-anticipated softness in Asia and weaker sales of its Alpha microprocessor, the sources said.
Goldman rates the stock market outperformer.

-- Salomon Smith Barney lowered its fiscal 1998 EPS estimate on Digital to $2.63 from $2.93, while
maintaining its buy rating on the stock, the sources said.

-- Salomon Smith Barney said it believed that Digital is experiencing a temporary slowdown in Alpha
Server sales due to its agreement with Intel Corp (Nasdaq:INTC - news), the sources said.

-- said Digital has had to convince a small number of customers that it is committed to Alpha on a
long-term basis and this has caused some sales to slip out of the current quarter.
