Almost always overstated. Over the 10 year period ended 2011, total annual unrecovered pipeline spills amounted to 75,000 bbl/year. Out of an average of maybe 375 ton-miles.

And the media always over-reacts to it (remember the "worst man-made disaster in history," the Gulf Spill? We're a few years down the road, and the Gulf has essentially recovered fully -- CJ's protestations noted a priori -- but it is over and has been for years).

When you boil it down, spills are pains in the ass, but far better to have them localized than spread out by trucks & rail.

At least 10 different pipelines of varying sizes run across property we own, mostly timberland, and we never give it a thought. If there is an issue I'm sure we'll be reimbursed for the damages.
