RESEARCH ALERT - SBC Warburg starts chip stocks

NEW YORK, Dec 17 (Reuters) - SBC Warburg Dillon Read said analyst Greg Mischou initiated
coverage of eight companies in the semiconductor industry.

-- put buy ratings on National Semiconductor Corp (NYSE:NSM - news), with a 12-month price
target of $39, Microchip Technology Inc (Nasdaq:MCHP - news), with a 12-month price target of
$48, Xilinx Inc (Nasdaq:XLNX - news), with a 12-month target of $48, and Level One
Communications Inc (Nasdaq:LEVL - news), with a 12-month price target of $46.

-- put outperform ratings on C-Cube Microsystems Inc (Nasdaq:CUBE - news), with a 12-month
target of $26, Atmel Corp (Nasdaq:ATML - news), with a 12-month target of $30, and Altera
Corp (Nasdaq:ALTR - news), with a 12-month target of $48.

-- put a neutral rating on Intel Corp (Nasdaq:INTC - news), saying that expects the next few
quarters will be challenging for Intel amid concerns for slowing Asian PC sales, a shift toward
lower-end PCs pressuring processor average selling prices, and margin pressure associated with the
ramp of Pentium II.
