Bogus disability payments are a huge problem nationwide.

As to what causes the higher rates in southern states, I don't know -- but I wouldn't assume it is more disability cheats. People in these states do tend to earn their livings with injury-causing physical labor that over a lifetime might well result in disability. Not saying that's the reason, only guessing that it is at least part of it.

OTOH, there are parts of MS, AR, and AL where the overwhelming attitude is toward getting government payments. Some of the Ozarks sections of Arkansas are lightly populated, mostly white, but extremely rural and redneck. I can imagine a lot of abuse in these areas. Also, the southern part of the state has a large proportion of poor blacks where abuse may be common.

Once again, we find a statistical conundrum, where it is unclear whether poverty caused disability abuse or real disability contributes to the poverty. Or neither. I can't say I know.
