Holly -

It could do it in the background (it does do that if you are doing something else). I think the reasoning is "why not do it when the computer is not busy?". Sort of like automatic tape backups - they bog down the system and can take a long time to complete, so you can set them up to happen when you aren't likely to be using the computer.

There are a lot of things going on in the background on a windows machine.

I wrote the 95/nt (plus US english&french&dutch too) versions of Pinpoint ( kellyservices.com scroll down to see what it does. I even wrote the easter egg that's in it) . PinPoint is a computer based trainer (CBT) that runs live. Essentially if you are learning how to use MS word you are running live with it instead of being in a simulation. I also 'have'* a patent related to CBT. Almost all of the CBT out there is simulation.

Because this runs live, it has to know how to control the system. I have intimate knowledge of how to invoke & maintain complete control over the OS.

I suspect MS figured doing it at midnight as a default was a better solution, since in theory your computer might be 'idle' at that point in time.

PS: have is a funny word. I jointly developed it, but Kelly owns it. I never saw a nickel cause I had left the company by the time it got patented: my bio explains something about it at: geocities.com
