Harry - Re: "Thanx for your excellent post (as usual). What
impact will this have on companies like CPQ/Tandem?"

You're welcome.

As for Compaq/Tandem, there will be a mixed effect. Right now, Compaq sells servers and Tandem's big push is transaction processors.

The Server side may be helped because Solaris will be available, making Compaq's servers capable of big-time enterprise operations - areas where Pentium Pro/Windows NT can't penetrate today because of the "limited" capabilities of NT, lack of demonstration of a robust NT that can support a huge organization.

Tandem's transaction processors, which run very specific O/S's and specialized non-stop, critical enterprise applications may find Solaris as a competitive product. This will come down to the issues of software - suitability for specific customer applications.

Re: Sun and licensing Solaris for re-sale - sure, if he reliazes that Compaq, Dell, etc. then become extensions and additions to SUN's own sales force.
