Rap, I've also been making images with Acronis WD edition and EaseUS but never had to recover from one. No preference so far. Since I have win8.1 there would be the added hassle of booting from a rescue CD [change BIOS]

Rap, now I prefer Macrium because it gives you a choice when making a rescue CD: either based on Windows PE or Linux. I chose Windows PE. It does not prompt you to insert a blank CD, so insert it before proceeding [otherwise it churns forever without error message]. Burning the CD took a few minutes. Optionally you can also make an iso file

Then, with the rescue CD still loaded, I restarted the computer and the Gateway logo appeared followed by a notice to hit any key to boot from CD. [no need to get into BIOS!]
Since the USB external drive was powered on, the rescue software automatically found the Macrium image file. I just told it to verify the image. Image was ok.

Since the rescue software found the image and verified it, I think it will also find it when doing a recovery.

I don't want to ask a dumb question, but I believe it is an important question.

Have you taken another hard drive and reinstalled one of your backup images and see if it works?

EaseUS ToDo BackUp Emergency Recovery Disk Option: Choose WinPE or Linux ...

<< Macrium backup image rescue CD boots computer without making BIOS changes in Windows 8
PS: other imaging software uses Linux for the rescue CD and requires making several BIOS changes before it will boot >>

The option exists in both EaseUS Todo Backup Free 8.0 and EaseUS Todo Backup Home 8.0. The WinPE bootable media can be created in either without installing AIK/WAIK. ...
