In a separate press release Wednesday, Tele-Communications Inc. (TCOMA) said affiliates of its Head End in the Sky organization, including TCI's domestic cable operations, ordered 6.5 million to 11.9 million digital set - top boxes from NextLevel over the next three to five years. TCI said the devices incorporate the OpenCable architecture adopted by CableLabs, the cable television industry's research and development consortium, in November. In connection with the orders, NextLevel is granting warrants proportional to the number of devices ordered by each organization, TCI said. The warrants are for the purchase of a total of about 16% of NextLevel. TCI confirmed that NextLevel will acquire HITS' digital authorization business from TCI's National Digital Television Center in exchange for a 10% equity interest in NextLevel. In turn, NextLevel will offer authorization service to cable operators for the purpose of managing the cable-operator interface portion of HITS, TCI said.
